The first thing I'd suspect would be the hard drive but I suppose it could a cd drive, floppy drive, zip drive. Have you tried running scandisc (thorough - with the surface scan)?

facts:
1. hard drive was changed 3 times already
2. motherbioard was changed twice
3. casing was changed once
4. all thats left that was not changed are: celeron 633processor chip, sound card, video card.
5. the crunching "rrrrrr" sound comes up usually after a long period of no use, say when i open the computer in the morning. the forum guys here used to say it was the powersupply but i changed the casing and it still makes the sound. i moved the computer to 3 different locations already thinking it might be an outlet problem...still the same sound. my other pc does not experience these problems plugged onti the same switch. this problem has been going on for over a year now. i spend so much time already tryin tofix it and im harased.... any clues??
6. could it be a riser card problem? since im using a celeron633?

This is a shot in the dark, mind you, but try removing the sound card.

Did you rule out the CPU and video card fans(assuming the latter has one)?
Also, go into BIOS and select the hard drive to be the first or only selected drive in the boot sequence option. If this quiets things down, then either the CD-ROM or floppy drive is causing the noise. Start up with the case removed and listen closely to each of these 2 drives. You should be able to tell which one it is.

Just a shot, does the floppy drive light come on when it makes this noise. If this is the case it is the floppy drive looking for media and it is a normal sound that a computer makes during the boot process. Unless it is abnormally loud or for longer than 3 or 4 seconds I wouldn't worry about it. This noise should be right after the POST and before Windows starts to load.
