Hi,

I'm running xp pro. My kids after Im-ing for hours and surfing have managed to screw up the system. When you try to open IE, "the page cannot be displayed" pops up. If I hit refresh or home several times it will open. The same thing happens trying to go to any website. Then the system may work for a few minutes, only to repeat the same problem. I'm behind a router running norton int. security. I've run spybot and NoAdware. Any ideas?

by pass the router and see if you can get a page. See if you can ping by IP addresses to a website outside of your lan. Disable the norton firewall to see if it can be teh cause of the problem. Could be a winsock issue, but will need more information after you find out it's not a firewall causing the problems. Good luck :)

I would suggest running an online AV scan, when you can finally get it to connect. I also suggest you remove the NoAdware and scan with AdAwareSE personal and remove anything it finds, then download Hijack This, install on a new folder in the HDD (not desktop or temp location), scan, and save the results. Post a copy of the results here in Applications and Security and wait for the experts to read and advise removal before doing anything.

Bypassing the router works. So, I tied a new router a d-link DI-604-- back to the same problem. Tried their help, can't seem to get it. Sometimes IE opens right away, sometimes it takes refreshing two times, or hitting home several times. Downloaded mozilla, same result.Deleted Norton ijnternet security, installed the 2005 version, same result . Here's hijack results:

if by passing the router works, there could be a setting somewhere either on the router that is making it so you cannot get online. I would do an ipconfig /all and make sure you are getting an IP address from the router, also ping the router.

I would also go to (in IE) tools->internet options->connections->lan settings and make sure the proxy server checkboxes are unchecked.

If things work fine bypassing the router, and a new router does the same thing, and settings on your workstation or ok. Could be bad cabling to the router as well.

It looks like you need to put your HJT log in its own thread with a suitable title [like "HJT Log"] so that the guys who know how to read them will know you need their help.
Put a link in there to this thread and vice versa.

Nothing obvious in your log.
One item worth checking in the running processes list is this
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spider.exe

Is that the spider solitaire game? If so, it's OK, otherwise it could be a backdoor trojan.
