View Full Version : AdAware SE hangs

I'm having the following problem with my AdAware SE (latest build with updated definitions):

I can run a smart scan without a problem. The scan performs all the way through and everything works okay. The problem is when I try to run a full system scan. It goes along normally until it comes to C:\Programs\Shared Files\Microsoft Shared\modeling\1033 and then it hangs. I have reinstalled the software three times now, but it always gets stuck in that exact spot. What could be the problem?

Also, just a question, but even after running MRU Blaster, the smart scan of Adaware SE is reporting 21 Negligible Objects in the form of MRU folders and their corresponding registry entries. Why is this? I just switched from AdAware 6, and I am thinking about going back to that.

Any insight is appreciated.

Well, AdAware6 is no longer supported, and no new definitions are going to be released, so I would not recommend going back.

Have you given it enough time?

I have noticed that there are a few spots where it seems like AA is taking forever. I didn't time it, but I think it is at least a full minute or more in each place. Then it takes off and completes.

Regarding AASE and MRU lists. I have noticed that too. I think that's just the way it is in SE.

And of course, when all else fails....you can always visit the Lavasoft Support Forums.
Have to keep those guys on their toes over there! :p
(Not to mention any problems resolved help with future releases too). ;)

You are also very likely to see similar problems and resolutions when you visit...I know I have in the past.

Thanks to all who responded. I will give their support forum a shot and see if I can figure out the problem. I still find it odd that it always hangs on this one folder. Is there a way I can at least (for now) tell it to "ignore that one folder," just to see if it hangs anywhere else? I'm pretty sure I'm giving it enough time to do its job (went out to dinner last night, and when I came back AAW SE was still scanning that same folder!--no exaggeration, either!).

Here is a reply I got at the Adaware support forum. Not sure what this will do for them, but:

He said:
Not sure what the problem may be, but our usual 1st recommendation
is to run the "Full System Scan" until just BEFORE you know it "freezes"
press "Cancel", attempt to remove/delete all non-LSP "critical objects"
such as "tracking cookies" & "Alexa", reboot/restart the computer and
repeat that procedure until hopefully you can get a scan to "finish" !?
If that happens, feel free to post the resultant logfile in this "thread" .

This file:

C:\Programs\Shared Files\Microsoft Shared\modeling\1033

(edit) has no listing on Google-- that is generally not good news.

Run adaware in safe mode yet? Are you running Spybot or A Squared? Do they hang up or report a problem with this file? Can you run 'search files' and see what it is ?

I ran a search on "1033" and came up with an entire page of results. Most had to do with SQL Server, VB 6.0, and there were many 1033.mst files for my Hewlett-Packard printer. The folder C:\Programs\Shared Files\Microsoft Shared\modeling\1033\, which is what cannot be scanned by Adadware, actually contains 3 .dll files, is write-protected, and is 1.46 MB large.

The three .dll files in the folder are:

cmaxres.dll --> last accessed today
editres.dll --> last accessed yesterday
MERes.dll --> last accessed yesterday

All three files were created in 2002, so I'm thinking they were installed by the factory along with the Operating System (I didn't own the computer until the end of 2002).

I was able to run a custom scan with Adaware ignoring this folder, and the scan made it all the way through. I just opened the configurations page and deselected this one folder from being scanned). My system was clean. I'm not really sure why this one folder is giving me problems, but it sure is annoying..:(

Also, I run both Spybot and A squared, and neither one of them report any problems with this folder or the files therein.

You could try what is recommended here: http://www.techsupportforum.com/showpost.php?p=108467&postcount=5

Thanks Malcore. I just tried what they said to do in that link (ran Adaware from the command line while entering those two parameters), but the scan hung again on that same folder as before. It was worth a shot, anyway.

cmaxres.dll (http://www.fileproperties.com/c/cmaxres-dll.htm) looks like an Office related file, but should be located at: C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT OFFICE\VISIO11\1033\CMAXRES.DLL The other files are listed on the same page and are legitimate Windows files. Each file properties page should give the standard location for that file, and a decent description.

Check the proper location for those files, if you have both try renaming the folder (the folder that locks up Adaware, NOT the proper one) then see if you have problems booting or running Windows, if not you can delete the folder.

Hi Paleo Pete. Thanks for your post. I have the cmaxres.dll file only in the one location (using version 10). Should I change its location? Infact, I only found the one copy of all of those files in that folder on my computer.

The only difference is my folder is at: C\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Viso10\1033\
Shouldn't make a difference, should it?

editres.dll doesn't say much in the properties page, except that it is a Microsoft Code Editor Language Pack (I am running a German version of XP Home, which may be the reason). I also just noticed that this file is not write-protected as I had thought.

MERes.dll also has something to do with Visio--Viso database Modeling modeling engine language. It is also not write-protected as I had thought.

The thing is I haven't run MS Visio in a couple months, so I'm asking myself why these files have been used in the last two days. I also can't find the location where these files should be located either in the properties page--doesn't say. You are correct, however, that the files came from Microsoft Corporation and appear to be legit as far as I can tell.

I'm wondering how I should proceed?
Thanks

Well, I just wanted to get back to you all and let you know that after many, many posts at the adaware forum, this issue could not be resolved. I can at least run a smart scan, though. I have sybot and spyware blaster installed, so hopefully i can live without adaware. Thanks to all of you for your posts.
