I am trying to build a new PC. I was wondering if the parts I have listed here would get me anywhere. I am trying to build a real kick behind one.

One mainly for computer games with dial-up internet. (It might end up with high speed in a year or two.)

ATX Computer case
Abit ATX Motherboard 800/533MHz
Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 3.4E GHz
Dynex Internal Floppy Disk Drive Kit
Hewlett-Packard Pavilion 17” Flat Panel
ATI RADEON 9600 XT 128MB AGP Graphics Card
Creative Labs Modem Blaster V.92 PCI Internal Modem
Dynex 16x Internal DVD-ROM Drive
Microsoft XP Pro
Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop Keyboard and Mouse
Speakers

There’s only one AGP slots in the motherboard. Will that cause a problem? Motherboard says Audio on board. Do I need a soundcard then? What about cords?

What's the best retail place to shop? Best Buy? Circuit City?

Can I reuse old keyboards, mice, and monitors? Any idea where to get rid of old monitors, keyboards, speakers, and mice if I can't reuse them when building a new PC?

Will all those items work together? What do you recommend?

What model and is it compatible with your socket 478 Presscott CPU w/ 1MB L2 cache?

Hard drive???

Memory???

Never heard of Dynex so I have no idea.

Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop Keyboard and Mouse

Don't get this for playing games. I have the Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop Pro the mouse looses its signal often even with new batteries. the batteries last about half as long as they do in my daughters Logitech Cordless Comfort Duo. The MTBHW (Mean Time Before Hitting the Wall) is very short. It has great aerodynamic properties but not very good durability. The keyboard is great but the mouse needs some work.

No that will not cause a problem. The AGP slot is for the ATI RADEON 9600 XT 128MB AGP Graphics Card and that is the only card that you will have that will fit in an AGP slot. I have never seen a motherboard with more than one AGP slot!

On-board sound, or a PCI sound card that is up to you. Try it with on-board if you don't like it you can install a sound card later.

Your hard drive is fine.

The processor and motherboard are not compatible. The processor is a socket 478 and the motherboard will accept a socket 775 processors. These two things have to match up or the processor will not fit. You will either have to change the processor to a "socket 775" or change the motherboard to "socket 478".

The memory you have listed will not work with that motherboard. You need either 184 pin DDR pc2700 or 184 pin DDR pc3200. Recommend pc3200.

The video card will not work with that motherboard either. It is a "AGP" card, the motherboard supports "PCI Xpress"(the newer ,faster technology.) That mobo does not have a AGP slot.

My suggestion would be to decide what processor you want, then choose a motherboard that will be compatible. And then the video card and so forth..... Start with these things, then post back what you have come up with, and go from there.

Make sure the case you choose has at least a 400w power supply. P4's don't like anything smaller.

Yes, you can reuse your existing monitor, keyboard and mouse if you like.

Good luck. :)
