Hello all! I have a quick question for you guys. I currently own a Dell Dimension 4600 p4 3.0 ghz with 2 GB of ram and a gforce fx 5200. Now i know the video card is crap and overall it seems like i am frowned upon for using a dell pc to run my video games. But thats what i have to work with! My problem is i get really low framerates running world of warcraft usually around the 17-25 range and 30-45 range in closed in places. Any ideas what i might do to tweak this computer to get a little better performance out of it?

What operating system are you using??
What do you have running in the background (i.e. what's loading at startup)?

Perhaps we should back up just a second and address the "health" of you PC first...
I would suggest running AdAware and then SpyBot Search & Destroy...
Both links are in my Signature. Here's the canned "sophisticated" spiel for AdAware. Please run it first and then Spybot S&D, electing to fix all it finds.
> Instructions for scanning:
1. After installing Ad-aware, you will be prompted to update the program and run a full scan. De-select all boxes so that it does not run.
2. Manually run "Ad-Aware SE Personal" and from the main screen Click on "Check for Updates Now".
3. Once the definitions have been updated:
4. Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan as per the following instructions:
* Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.
* Under General Settings the following boxes should all be checked off: (Checked will be indicated by a green circle with a check mark in it, Un-Checked is a red circle with an X in it. If it is greyed out, those features are only available in the retail version.)
o "Automatically save logfile"
o Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"
o Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
o Prompt to update outdated confirmation) - Change to 7 days.
* Click the "Scanning" button (On the left side).
* Under Drives & Folders, select "Scan within Archives"
* Click "Click here to select Drives + folders" and select your installed hard drives.
* Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
* Click the "Advanced" button (On the left hand side).
* Under "Shell Integration", select "Move deleted files to Recycle Bin".
* Under "Log-file detail", select all options.
* Click on the "Defaults" button on the left.
* Type in the full url of what you want as your default homepage and searchpage e.g. http://www.google.com (http://www.google.com/).
* Click the "Tweak" button (Again, on the left hand side).
* Expand "Scanning Engine" by clicking on the "+" (Plus) symbol) and select the following:
o "Unload recognized processes during scanning."
o "Obtain command line of scanned processes"
o "Scan registry for all users instead of current user only"
* Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:
o "Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot."
o "Delete quarrantined objects after restoring"
* Click on "Safety Settings" and select "Write-protect system files after repair (Hosts file, etc)"
* Click on "Proceed" to save these Preferences.
* Click on the "Scan Now" button on the left.
* Under "Select Scan Mode, be sure to select "Use Custom Scanning Options".
5. Close all programs except ad-aware.
6. Click on "Next" in the bottom right corner to start the scan.
7. Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT - Even if not prompted to.
8. After you log back in, Ad-Aware may run to finalize the scan and remove any locked files that it may of found. Allow it to finish.
Once finished with both of these I would suggest running HiJackThis (link also in my sig) and post the log here as per the directions. Please! Do NOT fix anything until the experts here have a look-see.
This route will make sure that your system is clean and not being hindered by any "alien" scumware...

There are a few things that can be fixed in HJT which may help... Open HJT and put a check by these items:

Your log is looking clean now... Are things running any better?? There are a few things running that don't need to be and might be using resources (like QuickTime), but it doesn't look like there is anything bad there now...

There's a link on the opening page for Answersthatwork that provides some excellent observations on whether something is needed at Startup or not.
If I remember correctly, Pacs provides information on what an item is, but leaves it up to you to determine if it's necessary or not...Answersthatwork is a bit more definitive...

Once again i cannot thank you enough for your help! I cant really tell yet if things are running better. I guess i will have to fire up WoW and plug away for a few hours to uhhh "test" it (darn)!! I will follow up with that website and see what it has to say. Ill get some new framerate numbers and bounce them back at you guys. Again thanks for all of your help and input on this matter!!!!!

Ok! I played around a bit and the framerates are just about the same. Overall i would say things seem to be running a bit more smooth but the framerates have not changed! But!! Today i was playing and out of no where i get the blue screen with this error message......

Hello all! I have a quick question for you guys. I currently own a Dell Dimension 4600 p4 3.0 ghz with 2 GB of ram and a gforce fx 5200. Now i know the video card is crap and overall it seems like i am frowned upon for using a dell pc to run my video games. But thats what i have to work with! My problem is i get really low framerates running world of warcraft usually around the 17-25 range and 30-45 range in closed in places. Any ideas what i might do to tweak this computer to get a little better performance out of it?

a 3gig CPU, 2MB of RAM are more than enough for top spec gaming, I think the card will be letting your framerates down here.
The fx5700 and beyond would provide you with far better rates, I think you just have a bottleneck when it comes to graphics.
Can you provide a little more info on your card? pixel rates etc...
Have you ever tried running 3d Mark? It may be worth checking your benchmark on there against orther cards.

Also, does your motherboard have onboard LAN/sound etc...? That may not help.

Greetings! My sound card is a SB Live and other then that i believe the LAN is on the board. Under network adapters i have a INTEL Pro 100 ve network connection. Im not sure where to get the vidoe card information but i will download the 3d mark thingy and see what that turns up. Im really thinking that a new video card is in order here.
