Akamai technologies

You guys know whenever I log on the internet, I always see Akamaitechnologies' established connection with my computer. Do you know what is akamai technologies ? Is that a hacker ? thank you :(

I worried about this when I first saw it - Akamai acts as a cache - servers that wish to distribute info quickly but may be on the other side of the world can make use of 'local' cache servers - if you try to access a particular site, it could be loaded from the cache server rather than the actual site.

BTW: the word "Akamai" (sounds like Ahkah MEYE) in Hawaiian refers to mental acuity, 'smarts' in the practical sense.

Akamai servers have been used by hackers/spammers/script kiddies as open relays to obfuscate the point of origin of their attacks.
