New memory won't work

I have a HP Pavilion 6633c 500 mhz running windows 98. It came with 64 mb ram. I have tried repeatedly to upgrade it, but cannot get it to work. the user's guide says it can be upgraded to 256 mb. there are two slots for memory, one of which is taken by the memory that came with the computer. When I add a second chip, the computer begins to boot then displays the following message:

"Windows Protection Error. You need to restart your computer". That is all I get. When I go into Setup, it recognizes the extra memory, but the hangup seems to be when Windows tries to boot.

Is the problem with the memory I am buying? Is this a Windows problem? Do I need to boot in Safe mode (which it will let me do) and reset something in Windows? Does HP use a proprietaty memory module that doesn't play well with others? The answer to these questions will bring you a great big thank you and the warm fuzzy feeling that goes with knowing you have helped one of your fellow travelers on Spaceship Earth. When you add memory, u need to be sure that u are adding exactly the same type of memory (pc100, pc133) , then make sure you are putting the biggest memory stick first. Say you bought a 128 MB stick and wanna add it, the one you have is 64 MB so it is smaller, and originally I bet it is installed in the first memory bank, you need to take that one out and put the 128 MB stick where it is, and put the 64 MB stick in the next slot.
then when it starts to reboot, it's a good idea to press (del) while the computer is counting your memory, and enter the BIOS, but dont change anything, just tell it to save and quit. I just added memory myself with some people's help around here, and i went to crucial.com and bought memory there.

I am having different problems with my computer, but the memory is working fine.

Hmm...6633...almost the same as mine. You can run mixed memory, as long as the slowest isn't slower than your bus speed (with the 66MHZ FSB you have tha shouldn't be a problem). So let's say uou got PC100 (what cam in it may have been PC100 or just plain old PC66). Stick the biggest stick in the slot that originally held the memory, put the old stick in the second slot....reboot, <f1> to get into BIOS...while ther turn off the HP Logo (boot diagnostics or something like that =YES ), then reboot again and watch the memory count and make sure it is all there....if it is try booting to windows again, if not <f1> again and see if it is all there (should say on the first screen)...if not try just the 128NB and see if it works by itself.....
