I have a HP Pavilion 6633c 500 mhz running windows 98. It came with 64 mb ram. I have tried repeatedly to upgrade it, but cannot get it to work. the user's guide says it can be upgraded to 256 mb. there are two slots for memory, one of which is taken by the memory that came with the computer. When I add a second chip, the computer begins to boot then displays the following message:
"Windows Protection Error. You need to restart your computer". That is all I get. When I go into Setup, it recognizes the extra memory, but the hangup seems to be when Windows tries to boot.
Is the problem with the memory I am buying? Is this a Windows problem? Do I need to boot in Safe mode (which it will let me do) and reset something in Windows? Does HP use a proprietaty memory module that doesn't play well with others? The answer to these questions will bring you a great big thank you and the warm fuzzy feeling that goes with knowing you have helped one of your fellow travelers on Spaceship Earth. Any and all thoughts welcome, I'm about at the end of my rope. Thanks for listening
