Newbie with annoying crash... Nvidia Geforce suspected....

Hi guys. Glad I found this forum and I hope someone here can help. My system has a nasty habit of crashing at random (2 minutes or 2 days) when I'm playing Deus Ex, Rune etc, basically any 3d type game. I'm on 1GHz PIII, 192MB, Windows 2000, with Nvidia Gefore 32MB graphics. Since I only ever really get crashes during games I guess its the card. I'm using the very latest driver from Nvidia, and DirectX 8.1NT. The freeze is just a complete lock up, with picture frozen and a whiney noise from the speakers. Next stop is the reset button. I've looked around here and seen similar problems, but nothing exactly like this. Hope someone knows whats up... (and I hope my hardware's OK!)

Well, I may be off key here cuz I'm clueless with Win 2000, but...

Seems like everytime I mess with my vid drivers or Direct X I end up reinstalling my Unreal Tournament....oh well.

I believe the preferred order of install should be:

1) Motherboard AGP drivers...sometimes VIA 4in1 drivers.
2) Direct X latest version
3) Install latest usable detonator drivers from NVidia
4) Games install

To expand on the usable comment...I have a GeForce 2 MX 400 32 MB AGP Asus V-7100 Pure (hehe..dont you just love the mouthful an accurate description is nowadays) running Win 98 SE...I am still using the 21.83 series Dets...I switched to 23.11 for a bit, but got really shoddy playage from them..choppy video etc...so I went back to 21.83's without having to use the Det remover proggie.

So, you might consider switching back to the 21.83's which are located in the archives of NVidia. If you decide to go this route...try it first...but you may have to hunt down a program "Det Destroyer" or something like that, to remove the current Dets from your system.
