virus from a file i dled

im having a problem with my computer and i know its a virus
i dled something and when i scanned it, it said it was clean, and then my computer shutdown for some reason.
When i reboot my computer it shutsdown everytime.
Can someone tell me how to get into my comp to delete that file without reformatting?
PLease i really need help

Hi Newatthis, and welcome to The PCGuide.com, many happy returns. You will need to go into what is called Safe Mode. Do you know how to do this? If not, let us know when you post back and someone will walk you through it.

But first we need to know some things:

What kind of PC are you having a problem with? What is the Operating System (OS)--Windown Mellenium, Win Xp, Win 2000, etc., how old is it? Are you using any anti-spyware, like SpyBot or Adaware, and what kind of anti-virus do you have: Norton? McAffee? etc. . . Give us the specs on your system.
