First, Thanks for your help it is very much appreciated. Below is my HJT log. I can't run HJT 1.99 or cwshredder as they close before finishing. HJT 1.99 shuts down @ 023. I tried to download coolwwwsearch.smartkiller removal tool from Merijn but the page won't open. The HJT log below is from version 1.98. Also, I have a virus (detected by AVG) that I can't seem to get rid of. It is in C:\window\system32\calsp.dll and is named Trojan horse downloader.agent.5.P. Thanks again for any advice.

You have two of the nastiest infections around right now... One of them is a rootkit that is very difficult to kill and the other is an aggressive form of Vx2... We can start with the rootkit:

This is a process to use to try to deal with the rootkit... follow these (borrowed) instructions closely:

You may want to print this out
Download rem.zip from here (http://forums.skads.org/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=62)
Unzip the files in it (rem.bat and zip.exe) to your C:\WINDOWS\System32 directory.
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.
To get back to normal mode just restart the computer as you normally would.
Start | Run | type C:\WINDOWS\System32\rem.bat | OK
The .BAT file will run and should produce three files (log.txt, bad.zip, and bad.reg) in your C:\ directory.
Reboot normally
Please post the log (located at C:\log.txt)

Thanks Budfred, I've had trouble getting back online due to repeated crashes. I tried the link above for rem.zip and it is not working. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Looks like the menuing system has been disabled. :(

I'll include the latest version of Rem.zip as an attachment... Download it and follow the instructions from my earlier post:

Thanks again, Budfred. I hate to be such a pain but that didn't work either. Maybe I did something wrong??? I followed your instructions and downloaded from the attached file, extracted all files to C:\WINDOWS\System32. Booted into safe mode. Start-Run- and typed C:\WINDOWS\System32\rem.bat. I did this twice and both times got "Windows cannot find C:WINDOWS\System32\rem.bat". Should I boot to a different safe mode? Thanks!

The file is called remv3.bat now... Try it with that...

Thanks for your patience as I am really at a loss here. I tried to run C:\WINDOWS\System32\remv3.bat and still got 'Windows cannot find....' I did run it without the .bat and got a log but there was nothing there (posted below). I'm sure it's something I'm doing (or not doing) and unfortunately I am lacking in the technical issues department and just can't figure it out. Again, any help is much appreciated!

Well, let's go on with fixing some of the other problems and come back to the rootkit thing... Maybe it is some other issue after all, but the symptoms look like the rootkit...

To start, download the latest version of Ad-Aware SE and update it... Also download the Vx2 Plugin for it and install that... Run the plugin and then do a full scan... Fix whatever bad stuff it finds...

Do the same thing with Spybot and run an online virus scan with Housecall from my links... After you are done with these steps, post a fresh HJT log... Try the 1.99 again and see if it works...

Thanks again Budfred....OK, I did everything. Several things found by adaware were not able to be fixed (even with reboot). Same with spybot. Hosecall found one virus, Trojan Agent.CAC, in C:\Windows\System32\calsp.dll but was unable to clean it because it was in use. The plug in for Vx2 said my system was clean. I tried to run HJT 1.99 but it still closed @ 023. I ran 1.98 and the log is below. What do you think? Thanks!

We can just start cleaning up what we can see and I will ask in my other forum if anyone can figure out why we can't see that rootkit... Please go to the same link below for HJT and download LSPFix... Then download TrojanHunter's trial version and the updates for it, the updates have to be manually installed for the trial version...

http://www.trojanhunter.com/

Run LSPFix... You will need to agree: "I know what I'm doing" and then select all instances of calsp.dll and put in the Remove window, then let LSPFix remove them...

Run HJT and check these items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.websearch.com/ie.aspx?tb_id=50032
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = http://www.websearch.com/ie.aspx?tb_id=50032

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [kalvsys] C:\windows\system32\kalvsig32.exe

Close all open windows except HJT and click on Fix Checked...

Reboot to Safe Mode and see if you can find WinTools in Add/Remove Programs... Remove it if it is there... Also, remove VBouncer if it is there...

Run TrojanHunter and let it fix what it finds...

You may need to set WinXP to show all hidden and system files to find these folders and files...

Find and delete these files and folders:

C:\PROGRA~1\VBouncer\VirtualBouncer.exe
SStb.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\BURNSI~1\Close style.exe This folder will start with BURNSI
C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\WToolsA.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\TBPS.exe
C:\windows\system32\kalvsig32.exe

Then, for good measure, run Ad-Aware SE in Safe Mode before rebooting to Normal mode and posting a fresh log...

Well, I've done everything you said and have definately made progress as I was a able to run a full HJT 1.99 (log below). I did however have some snags along the way. I was able to download the LSPfix but when I tried to run it, I would get 'The compressed (zipped) folder is invalid or corrupted'. I tried twice and got the same both times.

Also, I downloaded Trojanhunter and it found eight worms and was able to clean all but one, the Vx2.100. It tried again on reboot but was still unsuccessful. I keep getting a popup everytime on startup saying it was found again. I have tried to clean it but when I do my task bar dissappears and the popup will continually come up. I have to disable Trojanhunter on each startup. Should I uninstall? On a side note I tried the Adaware Vx2 plugin again and it still says my system is clean.

I was able to remove Wintools in add/remove programs but VBouncer wasn't there. I did find several (8) folders containing VBouncer when I did a search in safe mode but wasn't sure if I should delete them all as none of them matched 'C:PROGRA~1\VBouncer|VirtualBouncer.exe' exactly as you said.

I deleted everything else except C:\PROGRA~1\BURNSI~1\Close style.exe as I couldn't find it.

Also, I found and deleted C:\Progra~1\Toolbar\TBPS.exe. There were several other TBPS located in 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users' which were all the same size and created on the same date and time (very recently). There was one located in C:\Windows|Prefetch which was different in size and creation date than the others. Should I delete those as well?

Hope I haven't bombarded you...Please don't hesitate to let me know if I have. Thanks again for all your help!

I was able to download the LSPfix but when I tried to run it, I would get 'The compressed (zipped) folder is invalid or corrupted'. I tried twice and got the same both times.I am not sure what you mean here... Did you unzip the file before trying to run it?? If you did, you can try downloading a fresh copy and try it again...

I did find several (8) folders containing VBouncer when I did a search in safe mode but wasn't sure if I should delete them all as none of them matched 'C:PROGRA~1\VBouncer|VirtualBouncer.exe' exactly as you said.Check the Properties on the files that say VBouncer and delete them if they do not seem to be from a valid program... I am not aware of any valid VBouncer items that you might find, so they are probably all bad....

I deleted everything else except C:\PROGRA~1\BURNSI~1\Close style.exe as I couldn't find it.Did you find a folder that begins with "BURNS"??

Also, I found and deleted C:\Progra~1\Toolbar\TBPS.exe. There were several other TBPS located in 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users' which were all the same size and created on the same date and time (very recently). There was one located in C:\Windows|Prefetch which was different in size and creation date than the others. Should I delete those as well? You can safely delete anything in Prefetch... I would delete the other files you noted if the are the same size and date, but you can check Properties to be sure if you would like...

Then open HJT and check:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TBPS] C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\TBPS.exe

Then close all open windows except HJT and click on Fix Checked...

See if this has returned and delete it again if it has...

C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\TBPS.exe

Reboot and post a fresh log... If you are able to run LSPfix and clean up those other things, you will hopefully be clean...
