My CD-ROM drive is not working. The following is what I know.
1. The drive is receiving power.. Disk In light works, tray slider works, light on left side with no lable does not come on.
2. Device manager settings
General - Philips PCRW1208; type: CD ROM; mfg: (Standard CD-ROM device); HDWR ver: Not available; Device status: Working Properly.
Settings - Target ID = 0; Logical Unit Number = 0; Firmvare version = P3.1. Options checked = Disconnect, auto insert notification, DMA. Drive = M.
Driver - Provider = Microsoft 4-23-1999 No driver files required or loaded. So I click on Update driver, select all of the search criteria and it tells me that the best drive is already installed. C:\Windows\INF\MSCDRON.INF
3. There are no ! or ? appearing for errors.
4. I insert a CD-ROM and get the blue screen of death -- with the following error message: A fatal exception )E has occured at 0020:00000000. the current app.......>
Can any one help?

Hello HappyBcuzOfJesus,
Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif Forums!
Have you added any new software or hardware recently?
Would you head into SAFE MODE...then right click MY COMPUTER>PROPERTIES>DEVICE MANAGER. Click the + sign by the CD-ROM drive and REMOVE all instances you find. Reboot and let Windows reinstall the drivers.

could the problem not be the firmware in the cd-rom itself is corrupt?
i would try another cdrom from a working pc if you could borrow one to see if the problem lies in the cd-rom itself

Looks like the same error as before....
Once you are booted up...Use Ctrl+Alt+Del (Task Menu) and shut down all but Systray and Explorer...then see if you still get the same problem.

Reply 1- I do not have access to another CD-ROM drive, this drive was working properly until I restored the back-up of my C-Drive. I was asked if I wanted to replace hardware entries in registry and I said yes... this was probably my down fall. Are there any entries in the registry for which I should look?
Reply 2 - I shut down all but explore and systray and same problem occurs.
You restored a backup? How?
Try booting up and hitting <f8>; at the prompt select Command Linne (in 98 it should be option 5), then at the prompt type scanreg_/fix...that should get rid of tany registry entries pointing to the wrong place and may get some duplicate/conflicting ones too....

Hey good question on the how.... I used a CD and that was the last time my CD drive worked.[From a Windows backup *.qic]. I tried the scanreg /fix and it didn't take care of the problem. I have gone into Norton Utilites and "undone" all of my previous fixes. I am going into each entry and doing a manual fix. My goal is to get to the point where I only have CD fixes, then we can talk more. When I began I had over 800 fixes and I am down to 100+ so I am making progress and I do appreciate the help you are giving me. So I am off to repair and I will be "talking" to you again once I pare down the errors.

Okay here are my error messages I have serched for and not found these files. I am afraid that they are related to the original CD-ROM drive I had installed in my machine. I now have a Philips RW drive.. PRW1208. I would greatly appreciate any help you can provide.
