Did you know norton can not scan the contents of zip files.
However McAfree will, but does it scan all compressed files?

Not sure where you got that mis-information from, but not only will Norton scan zip files; but it will intergrate into WinZip so you can actively scan new files you wish to verify before you unzip them or create them.
The only problem i've ever encountered with Norton and zip files is when they are password protected, which is specified on the symantec support site ( if norton ain't got the pasword, it can't open the zip ) which it will tell you in the scan log what it did not scan, and why.
Go to their site, Symantec (http://www.symantec.com/) and peruse their support site-they give plenty of info on this particular quirk.

If you watch norton while it's scanning ( and i've been using it for years as well as my company and other major busineses ) it'll tell you " scanning compressed files ".
Now if a zip ain't the very definition of compressed, i don't know what is! And as further proof i've had it stop a no# of virii or trojan infected files that were in zip format when i've had them either emailed to me, or given to me on removable media ( such as floppy or CD ).
As Yoda says, you can't believe ever thing you read just because they ( a so called respective reporting firm ) tells you it's true. Get a copy of Norton and try it out.
My experinace with McCrap is that it scans a zip file, but it ignores[ some of the most virulent virii programs out there?! Not exactly the behaviour you want for a multi-million dollar business!!
Here is a sample of one of my system scans straight from the norton activity log;
..The file ccdclean.exe in compressed file C:\Downloads\CloneCD.zip was infected with the Backdoor.Trojan virus.
So, unless my english is faulty, sure looks like it caught that virii in a zip file. And by the way it did find and delete that file, because i verified it's existance before and after the scan.
{ i have norton set to delete virii by default-i already know how to program them so i'm not particularly interested in decompiling them again. }
Always take what you see on review sites with a grain of salt, try it yourself first before making a judgement on a product-it'll help stop rumours and give you a better feel for how things should or should not be presented.

Unless it has been fixed in the latest release, McAffee does not scan Ghost images or some other compressed file types.

Well actually ive had norton for 3yrs now. And yes i do see it scan zip files, thats like why i was this cant be right. Just trying to understand why 2 companies have such bad information like this. I think i might email them, there something to this and i dont know what it is.
It might be like it doesnt scan newly downloaded zip files or something. Ill emailed them and make them elaborate on this issue.

May be there talking about the new version of norton 2002, do you know if 2002 version will do it? It would be odd if they would just drop this feature.

That log file was from 2002-i could give similar ones from 2001 also. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
I usually run mine only in the proxy email mode; and i have it set up with DAP ( download accelerator Plus ) to auto-scan a file after it has been downloaded.
Don't really see a need for it any other time. { it's also enabled to scan for scripts during IE or Netscape surfing }
Doesn't need to run constantly in the background re-scanning the same ol'
files-once it's scanned them, and they're clean, kinda redundant ( and system resource wasteful ) to continue to do it again and again.
Of course, this is just my setup, and is not necessarily the right one for anyone else. Especially novice PC users.

I use Ontrack virus scan by Trend Micro (makes InoculateIt) it scans compressed files but it can't scan a double zipped file (zip inside a zip) It can't scan a drive image file or virtual CDROM but it will let you know it couldn't scan them and gives you a list fo files it couldn't scan. I have my AV and firewall (Ontrack NetDefence) on 24 and 7 scanning everything it can and have never had a hint of a virus. I like Ontrack Products because they run silently in the background and don't use allot of resources.
