First question is for the neighbor. He is having problems sending jpg's using OE. His system has the home version of xp. He says the recipients can't open the files. I don't use OE; any suggestions?
His question brought up an old problem I have using Eudora and messages sent to AOL users. They can't open the file if it is jpg. this happens only with AOL. Does AOL need some special file extension?
Are they getting any error messages? Does the file show up with the email, or maybe something saying it has been deleted?
If the files are large it could be something to do with the ISP's not wanting to deal with the large file.
Also I know AOL tries to protect you be not allowing you to look at or download images by default. You actually need to do a bit of work to be able to download and view them.

Ask your neighbor to check the following in OE...
Open Outlook Express.
1) Click on tools
2) Click on the options
3) Click on the security tab
4) Under the Virus Protection heading: Make sure that the "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" is not checked.
This should take care of it. I was having the same problem too.
As for your other question I have no idea... Sorry

The "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" setting should be set on the recipients' OE if that is what they are using.
AOL does all sorts of non-standard stuff so they should check with AOL.
You could try zipping the jpgs into zip files just to see if the file type does make any difference. Easily done in WinXP at either end using RClick and "Send to CompressedFolder" to create and "Extract" to get the jpg back.
If the files are huge (over 1 or 2 MB on dialup) you might need to use a file splitter and merger utility if it is the ISP that is affecting the outcome when large files are sent.

"He says the recipients can't open the files"
Do the recipients have at least one viewer application installed that is capable of viewing ".jpg" files?
And are ".jpg" files properly registered to be opened using that [or any suitable] application?
If they save the jpg file to the HDD and right-click on it, does the context menu show "Open" listed?

I think the reason why you can not open the attachments is due to the fact that OE is blocking him from doing that. Let me ask you this.. Can he see that there is an attachment to the email? Is it that he can't open it for some reason? If your friend can see that there is an attachment then OE maybe blocking him from opening it due to the fact that it (OE) may see it as a potential virus. This built-in security feature caused be a bit of grief. OE would not let me open any attachments that where pictures, PowerPoint, or Word files just to name a few.
