Looks like maybe it wasn't a virus after all--a friend suggested taking a chance and rebooting--and now it's acting normal again and I'm currently running a virus scan. I'm sorry I panicked. Windows is so dumb....

OK, I'm dumb too. Next step, Norton rescue disks.

Thanks anyway,
Murphie

murphie,
Thanks for posting back but it would have made more sense to post back in the other thread you had started rather than start a new one.
Glad to hear it is working though.
:p

Yes, of course, you're right, I should have left it there. All the more because the problem is not solved after all, although it doesn't seem to be a virus. Early this morning I couldn't open any program or file. After I restarted it was somewhat better, but after a spontaneous restart, Windows "error reporting" said there appeared to be a hardware problem.

I looked in the Event Log and it has 15 disk errors and 8 BIOS errors today--compared to one or two once in a while, most of the time. I really don't know how to interpret that information, but the Microsoft links say that there is probably a faulty hard drive cable, and that the BIOS should be updated.

The computer was built for us by a friend, so I may call him, and hope for the best. If anyone has any ideas, I'll be grateful--I hope I've given you enough information here.
Thank you!
Murphie

It well may be a cable loose or something that has gone bad with the HDD.
The reason for my reply was to help future readers of the forum posts, it helps if we:
1) post our issue in an appropriate forum with needed information if possible
2) continue in that post until issue is resolved.
And yes, we all were new posting here at one time. :)
