PCI read configuration failure

This error PCI read configuration failure is all I get when I try to boot an old 133 mhz compaq using a boot disk. Can anyone tell me what that error is saying? And how it may be able to be fixed. I know it's an old system but I kept it to...lets say play on, for learning purposes.Any help is much appreciated.

Can you get into the BIOS?

If so, the reload the default values and if you have toe option to rest the hardware configuration data do that (or PCI )...there is probably something that was installed at one point and is no longer installed or no longer working...
