Hello to my fellow members of this great online community. I am just making a formal announcement, for those who haven't already noticed, that I changed my screen name from newbie2004 to FastLearner. I am still the same person, though...:)

I just feel that I've learned so much from all of you in the past months that I shouldn't be callng myself a newbie anymore... :p

As a result of your efforts, I'd guess my skill level is already in the 'advanced beginner' category (at least in networking--still a newbie with hardware, but I won't tell if you won't!).

Well, see you all in the forums.

It seems to me your being a tad presumptuous. ........... I mean changing your own name based on your own opinions? Perhaps you should have waited for someone else to elevate your status here. That is the usual protocol. :(

Changing one's name is hardly an elevation in status. I think FastLearner is actually referring to all the sage advice and knowledge dispersed on this site, and the fact that if one spends any amount of time here, one is bound to learn quite a bit in a short while.

I just hope name changing doesn't become a trend, as it can be a bit confusing when forums allow anyone and everyone to change their names at a whim.

And Donn, no worries mate, we can always start calling you The Donn.

Wow, that was pretty deep. I didn't change my status. I just changed my screen name. Let me give a little background, scylla, before you are so quick to criticize my decision.

I chose the name newbie2004 back in July when I was setting up my first home network. At the time, I felt like a complete idiot, so the name newbie2004 was quite appropriate. At the time, I had planned on making that one post here at the forums and then moving on with my life. But then it happened...

Instead of finding a forum that only technical questions are asked and answered, I found an online community of people who were enthusiastic about helping others and I received a very warm welcome. That being said, I decided to stay here and ask as many questions as I could until the members here probably couldn't take it anymore... :D Now, 7 months later, I actually sometimes find myself on the "answering" side of questions. Forgive me if I am proud of this fact. In no way have I ever (or will I ever) claim to be an expert or a know-it-all when it comes to computing.

Anyway, to make a long story short, I did not reach this decision overnight. The subject started coming up back in December (actually, changing my name was suggested more than once by other members, and not myself) in one of the networking threads--can't remember which one now). And in deciding upon the new name, I wanted a name that could stay the same as I grow.

You can compare it to parents naming their kid "Tuna Fish Head" or "Butt Hair." It may seem funny at the time, but the kid has to live with that name for the rest of his life. In my case, I plan on being around here until the day ixl has no more energy to keep the site going, so I don't think it should offend anyone that I changed my screen name.

malcore: I agree that it could get confusing around here if everyone started changing their name, and I really hope that I haven't started such a trend. I wasn't even sure it was possible to change it until I asked Charles (ixl) in a PM.

Anyway, I am still the same person who joined the formus back in the beginning of July. And...I am the same person who will still be here next July...:)

Thanks.

Fast Learner, I can totally relate, if it wasn't for this place, I would still be throwing rocks at my PC :D

I have learned an immense amount of puter stuff and haven't been able to contribute to the vast think tank that exists here but there is always a chance that someday it will happen! At work they think I am a puter genius...lol which I am not and that is further affirmed when I come here, :D

Welcome to the fam and may your journey be a exuberant one! :p

No, actually I wasn't envious of the name-- I was just ribbing him about having a new name by addressing him by his old name. . .

"The Donn," hmmm, then we have to have the Godfather theme playing every time you use it. No, sorry that's not me, but I am, at this point, glad that I no longer have red hair with you guys around

BTW ol' boy, if you are in Japan, how 'bout posting a thread and letting us knwo where you are and what it's like...Tokyo, or where?

And just to be sure--"Donn" is my real legal name, it is nto Donnie, Donny, or Donald. The Jewish side of the family insists it is a Jewish name-referring to knowledgeability, and the Irish side of the family insists it comes from the Irish tradition of the mythical ruler of the mountains by the sea. Unfortunately neither confers upon me the knowledge of this weekend's Lotto numbers so I can buy the estate in the mountains down to the sea.

Hey Donn. What's "ribbing"?

Americanism, probly comes from 'poke in the ribs', like kidding or teasing :)
