i just installed my new RAM making me have a total of 512MB RAM
but i dont know if this extra ram has made much difference?
like games are laoding faster but general stuff like starting up the computer
is still the same. Could i have installed the RAM wrong.
there was 2 heights that the ram could clip in at i pushed it right down.
does the 2 heights matter for anything?

If the RAM clipped down and the system is recognizing it, then you installed it correctly. Trust me, you'd know if you installed it incorrectly! :p

Yes, games will run faster, but other things may not be noticeably faster. Windows is certainly happier with twice as much RAM, trust me! But you may not notice every little bit of speed you gained. Other things, like starting up the computer, aren't RAM-dependent anyway so you didn't gain any speed there. Starting up the computer is all on the hard drive! You want it to start up faster? Get a WD Raptor hard drive at 10,000 rpm's and watch Windows fly! :D

Some things you can do to maximize your RAM upgrade in Windows: 1) Defrag! Defragging your hard drive will speed up your system overall and will help keep it in tip-top shape. 2) Make sure your virtual memory (swap file, page file, whatever else you want to call it) is all one size. Nothing drags down a computer like a swap file that Windows manages on its own! Manually set the swap file to a size like 500MB or whatever, and I bet that right there will speed up Windows booting up if you haven't already done it! 3) Visit the Windows Update page and download & install any critical updates you haven't done lately. That will keep your system lean and plugged while online. :D
