I need help. I have a packard hell computer. Last night, I wanted to use it. So I turned it on, and I noticed that my monitor wasn't getting the usual loading picture. I also noticed that nothing was working, such as the hard drive, cd-rom, floppy, etc. I tried restarting the pc with alt+ctrl+del. It didn't work. So I tried turning the pc off manually. It was not working. So the alternative left was the power plug. I disconnected it. I connected it again and was still on! Usually when I had to do that, the pc would be off and I had to turn it on manually again. But this time, it just stayed on. It doesn't turn off. Nothing powers up except the fans. Other than that, nothing seems to work. How can I solve this problem? Could it be the motherboard? I know you will tell me that its the pc -- I know!! PB's are not good. But before, I had no problems whatsoever with this pc. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

How old is this machine?
Try clearing the BIOS settings (if it is an old enough PB you may not have a battery but a Dallas chip or a soldered on battery...), but it sounds like either the switch has gone bad (which is why it was still on when you plugged it back in ) or the battery has died and the BIOS settings are nnot being properly stored in the CMOS....

Vic, thanks for the quick reply. My operation system is windows 98. Now my problems is, what is an a/v check? When it comes to computer hardware, I am a true illeterate.
Mjc, thanks for your response. My PB is about 4 years old. It's a pentium II 400mhz. I'll the batery. Hopefully that'll be it!
Once again, thanks for all your replies!!

I replaced the batery; no luck. I also noticed that my power supply has to settings: 115v and 230v. It was on 115v. I moved it to 230, I saw/heard the hd working. I tried turning off the pc manually, it didn't let me. I disconnected the plug and tried back in, the pc was off, but it wouldn't turn on manually either.

a/v is antivirus software, i would recommend taking it to a local shop, because it could be a lot of things, if its hardware related then the best thing to do is take it to the shop. It will save you time and hard ache.

only thing I can suggest it take it somewhere to have it checked, see if anything is salvageable!
