of ES1869 Plug and Play AudioDrive (WDM) not working properly. There is no speaker icon near the clock. When I go to the sound options, everything is grayed out! It says "This device is disabled because the firmware of the device did not give it the required resources. (Code 29)" The computer is and old Compaq Presario 5442. I've checked the internet, and people have had this problem too, but it was on 98 and ME, not XP Pro. It says to enable the firmware in BIOS. How can I do that? Please help, and thanks for taking your time to.

Try updating your SoundCard Drivers to the correct one for WinXP. There are two listed (one has a revised version too) for your model at http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?dlc=en&lc=en&product=93346&lang=en&cc=us&os=228
Each one has further info and a download link if you follow the three hyperlinks.
PS
You may also need to install the drivers/inf files for the relevant chipset beforehand. Have a scout aroud the support pages for your model.

If that is actually your problem  I think you need you install the driver again than to do something as what you just said!

We don't worry about who answers the question, just that it gets answered and is correct.

Nevermind, It's fixed. My dad found what was wrong. The startup settings had to be manually set, but thanks for helping. :D

Well can conclude that its your fault to turn it on and then trun it off, htat s why your father found what was wrong. Good luck and be careful next time, father and son! :D :D
