Newie question Replacing cpu

Replacing the whole mother board can be done ? what motherboard should fit a student-level need ?Thanks

1: Yes. But the motherboard limits the CPU type and speed
2: Yes. But usually it is better to start from scratch with new RAm and processor too
3: What will the student want to do? Games? Graphics? Or just Word documents?
