I get booted off the net constantly without even knowing it. My computer will just act like it's thinking and then lo and behold, I pick up my phone receiver and there is a dial tone. My internet provider says it's either my modem or possible line noise. I have the right modem, does anyone know anything about line noise or how to fix this problem?

hi,
are you sure you're not connected when you pick up your telephone and that by that act of picking it up you don't knock yourself offline??
prior to picking up the phone can you send and receive data via the internet??
do you have your modem set to block out call waiting ??
has Ohio succeeded from the USA ??

Well i'm pretty sure that i'm not connected anymore. It will act like it's thinking but nothing. I will check to see if i can still send stuff. Also, I don't have call waiting.

I should be an expert by now on line noise since our phone lines were apparently installed shortly after Noah's voyage. However, have a couple of questions. Has this just begun to happen recently? Have you changed anything..phone wise?..like added a phone, or moved a cordless phone near the puter (someone said once that a cordless too close to puter causes interference), or changed the actual phone cord between puter and outlet (or your cat's been using cord as a fun thing to gnaw on)? My ISP told us once that it was line noise, but when getting the phone repair guy out here..he laughed and said that one always has line noise, but gave me some slack on it (no charge for laughing) because phone and ISP same company. If you're pretty sure it is nothing inside your house causing a problem, then call your phone company and ask for tech support. (The reason I say to be sure is that they charge a lot now..usually..if they come out and don't find any problem on their end.)
I can't find it now..argh..but someone will know where that setting is that says "disconnect call after whatever minutes"...you might check and see if that box is checked to disconnect you automatically. But I am back to question of..did this just start happening or has been a problem for awhile now? My husband had the same problem for a long time, and we tried many things, but main problem turned out to modem/Ethernet adaptor thingy.

Kay that would be under modem properties.control panel>modems>properties>Connection>set it for what you need.

No, that's not the one I am thinking of. There's a Properties or Settings tab somewhere that brings up a tiny little box above the window one is in that has only two things in it..one is "disconnect.." and I cannot remember what the other setting is. I have never found it except by accident while troubleshooting something. A wiser person would write it down next time, huh?

disconnect call after whatever minutes"...
I belive your talking about the "enable idle disconnect" setting on the "dailing" page of your dial-up networking "profile".
but main problem turned out to modem/Ethernet adaptor thingy.
I think Kay is on the right track here. I had the same problem once and it turned out to be my modem.

Hello SRP and Welcome,
Still waiting for your response to questions ask, but, remember this.
Phone companies are only responsible for enough line quality to make a phonecall. Minimal line noise to a modem is extreamly disruptive. They most likely won't make any corrections until you complain that you are loosing phonecalls.
A phonecall that sounds like someone is dragging steele drums around in the background will stay connected. This is unacceptable for modem connection. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Try the following and see if you get any errors
Start
Settings
Control Panel
Modems
Highlight modem
Click Diagnostic tab
Highlight the port with the modem
Click more info
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The system will send a series of commands to the modem and display the repsonses. If there are errors, it will report them.
Do any of your friends have an external modem they can lend you. If so, install the modem and see if the problem persists. There is a reason yiu can get a Winmodem for under $20.00. They S???.
Post back the results of the test above
