A few days ago I got a call from an uncle who was looking for some help in setting up my cousins new laptop. He said that it came with a trial version of Windows XP, and they had to buy Windows in 30 days. Now to me that sounds just like it is nagging to get activated.

This is an off the shelf laptop from like CompUSA or some such place. My initial feeling was it is just Windows nagging to get activated. Has anyone heard of such a thing as a new computer coming with XP installed, but needing to buy the license seperately after a period of time? If it is going on it seems like a horrible way to trick people into thinking they get a working computer, but then actually need to go pay for the OS etc. after the fact.

Microsoft did introduce a 'Preview version' of XP in 2001 which would expire in 180 days. Maybe, your uncle's computer has this version of windows installed ?!?

30 days does sound like the activtion period. If it is, I would just attempt an activation and take it from there; the worst that can happen is they refuse to activate it. Usually you get bored silly with prompts to activate if that is what is going on.

Maybe see what system it reports under [RClick MyComputer -- Properties -- General].
