wireless router

Hi

Want to share a cable modem that is connected to my computer with a laptop using a wireless router.What hardware do I need,and also how do I do it.

Wireless router that supports whatever standard 802.11 a/b/g or a combination of them, some CAT-5 ethernet cable(s), a wireless adapter for each PC. If the laptop is already wireless capable, you don't need an adapter for that. If you want to go wire with the desktop (as I did), you don't need an adapter for that.

Good wireless routers are made by several companies: Lynksis, Belkin, D-Link to name a few, same with the adapters. It's not really critical but I'd recommend getting a matched set. Here's the wired part:

cable----(coax)--->Cable Modem----CAT-5----|Router|--->|PC NIC|PC

The router will broadcast to the wireless adapter in the laptop. You'll have to install the router software, configure it, and configure the two computers.

Depending on what you need and what you pick, total cost could be less than $100.

i hear a dlink wireless network (all dlink wireless devices) can communicate at 22Mbps over 802.11b, but you could always spring for a 802.11g network. that gets up to 54Mbps, and lots of device companies do that. how does your existing cable modem hook into your computer? if its usb, you need to find a way of trying to jury rig something, or just buy another modem that has a link of ethernet.

Wireless-G or dual B/G is pretty much the standard now. All the cable modems I've seen these days have both ethernet and USB connections--ethernet is faster. Any reasonably new PC comes with a NIC standard. Wired is more secure and generally faster, all other things being equal. So that means wiring into the desktop is the better idea.
