Trojan Horse....Help

Hi....

I have Vx2.ZSERV and the eXact. downloader showing up and wreaking havoc. OK...I am not sure what happened but 2 days ago I noticed some pop ups starting, I did virus scan using Norton 2004 professional, I have used Spybot S&D, Adaware, and even Microsofts new anti-spy program, and a couple of others I tried that ended up costing if you wanted to remove problem. By the way the Microsoft program is the only one that gave me the option and said it was removed from my system. However after reboot it rears its ugly head again. Every time I or anyone gets on the net the pop ups etc...etc...start all over...And a system restore back to Saturday is not possible since I turned it off and did several scans to get out of that restore file if it was there. Please, does anyone know of a utility that will rid me of this for good? Or am I doomed...............I spent hours Monday night running scans and trying to eliminate the problems.......If more information is needed please just leave me a note and I will provide. Windows XP Home is the operating system for this computer.

Please download a copy of HijackThis (http://www.subratam.org/?page=removal).

Unzip it to a permanent folder.

Double click on the Icon.

Choose the option to scan

Once ypu have scanned, clcik save log.

Post the entire log back here as a reply to this post.

Cut it in half, or more if needed, and put it in two or more posts. :)

EDIT - Go ahead and post the log. If you are infected, the infection might be in the attachment. :( Most people don't like downloading attachments, unless they are from a known good source. :)

Have Hijack This fix all of the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and hitting fix checked. Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing.

If you have the latest version of Vx2 it is very difficult to remove and may be hidden... Please download and run this program to generate a log, then post that log here:

Post the log, but do not do anything with the info in the log... most things will be legit...

David I tried the remedy that you suggested and it has seemed to have worked. I have did what you have asked and posted the log of hijack this after I did what you asked. It is in two different posts due to the size. The only thing that I can tell is that there is still two items after a boot that are tying to get on my system, they are, and I am sorry for vague info, but they try to change the default search for my browser. 2nd Part of hijackthis log as asked for by David Eaton.......anyone that looks at these and has ideas from post rite before this pleases feel free. I would also like to know if it is OK now to run the anti spyware tools and see if there is anything else on the system I did not want to do this without asking first. You have a few things you can clean up in HJT, but nothing that looks really bad... You need to disable TeaTimer and reboot before doing the fixes or TeaTimer is likely to restore them... The open HJT and check these items:

To disable Tea Timer like you asked me to do I went into msconfig and unchecked so it would not start after boot, I then rebooted, did the scan, checked the problems that you pointed out in HJT and clicked fix. I then got out of HJT went back into misconfig rechecked Tea Timer and rebooted and ran the scan to post for you here. Thanx again for all your help, I appreciate much. Yes, I was going to update to SP2 a while ago and then just have got busy and "lazy." But I will get un lazy after this and get it done. I will look forward to your reply...Cobra

Your log looks clean and I don't think that R0 will be a problem, so you can go ahead and update... Here is my standard prevention speech to avoid infections in the future:

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article linked below about "How did I get infected". You need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall (a router firewall is not enough) and a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads. All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

I truly do appreciate the help and am very grateful. Hopefully I will not need you again, for a PC problem, but if and when I do, I surely know where to come for help. Ok I am off to install a software firewall, since in fact I do have a wireless router and you do not think that is suffiecent enough protection. I have been wondering that myself for some time. After I do this, its off to see our friends at Microsoft and get SP2 installed.

You can post your own log in your own topic... Do not jump in on someone else's topic... Also, if you believe you have Vx2, you need to start with an HJT log so we can see if there is evidence there... You do not have the relevant file noted in the FindIt log...
