I'm trying to get my computer to start in Safe Mode, but for some reason i can't access the utility of the motherboard. When i press the button, this error message appears: "No device detected. Utility disabled. Press any key to continue"...

How do I reenable this device so I can access my motherboard utility?

thank you for your help,
G

System spec please.

What utility, mobo ?

F8 should get you in to Safe Mode.

oh i forgot. I am running Windows XP on a computer that I built a few months ago. The motherboard is an ASUS A7N8X-Deluxe....I'm not quite sure what 'utility' it's talking about....

perhaps i should run the CD that came with the mobo again?

sorry that's an A7N8X-E Deluxe mobo....

i ultimately want to be able to check my CPU temperature and enter Safe Mode...but without the ability to access this 'utility', it seems impossible....

Try holding down the DEL key during bootup to enter the BIOS setup. It sounds as if this is where you are trying to get into to check some settings and values. Safe mode is a different kettle of fish; safe mode boots windows up in a minimalist configuration by using F8 during startup.

ah, ok, all i really want to do is go into safe mode....but when during startup should i press F8? The first thing i see is the motherboard logo (from there I have the option to press DEL to enter BIOS setup if i wanted to), then it goes to...i guess what is called the POST screen?, then it enters Windows. When during that startup sequence should i hit F8?

thanks again

Start hitting F8 as soon as the post screen is done. Or you can start hitting it before, as it wont do anything while you are still in the post screen, but you won't miss the small time you have to go into safe mode. Some say you can just hold the key down, instead of hitting it over and over, but I haven't tried it yet.
