SuSE 9.1 (Firefox) funs noticably slower than WinXP (Firefox) on my cable connection.
My guess is, is that I may speed up SuSE if I can disable unneeded "services" or stop them from loading at startup.
In WinXP I can accomplish this using "msconfig" or Control Panel>Admin Settings.
How can I disable unneeded services in SuSE?
I mean...who needs five different cd audio players? Find which one works the best on my box, then disable/uninstall the rest. This is easily done in Window$.
I imagine it is easy to do in Linux too...once you know how.

In SuSe you would use the local package manager to uninstall unwanted programs. Don't know what it is called off hand, Yast maybe.
To affect firefoxs performance type about:config in the address bar, and look for the elements
network.http.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests
Use right-click and toggle the network.http.pipelining to be true, and increase network.http.pipelining.maxrequests to 100 and see if you get any benefit.

Right Pave...
The Firefox tweaks are:
(1) type about:config into address bar and hit return
scroll down to find network.http.pipelining highllight it and right-click to change the boolean value to "true"
(2) next, find network.http.proxy.pipelining highlight it, right-click and set its' value to "true"
(3) next find network.http.pipelining.maxrequests and set its' number to some number ...like 30...this will increase the number of requests the browser will make at once.
(4) Lastly , right-click anywhere and select New and integer
Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its' value to "0"
This is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts in the information it receives.
I got this tweak from the "Forevergeeks" blog.
This tweak will only help with a highspeed connection. If you have dial-up, then you will continue to suffer.
Now,....on to YAST to see what I can get rid of.
Thanks (again) Pave

I've seen this one recommended be set at everything from 25 through to 100. mines set to 100. and I only know it did make a noticeable improvement over being set at 4.
