Did you add software or hardware recently, if so uninstall whatever you put on there and see how it runs. It seems like your registry could be corrupted.

Go to Start / programs/ accessories/System Tools/System restore
Go to a date you know it worked right and click restore. Then restart, see that helps.

If system restore won't work, go to the Symantec web site and you can get instructions to manually remove Norton Utilities.

Once you've done that, there are a million possibilities.

How much of your system resources are free???

What programs are loading at start up?

When was the last time you updated your virus definitions?

When was the last time you scanned for virus'?

Are there any conflicts in device manager?
