I recently upgraded to XP Pro with SP2. Now when I use the Windows Search feature first the Windows Installer box appears. "Preparing to Install" Then, "Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Office 2000 Professional."

Then, "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Insert the Microsoft Office 2000 Professional disk and click OK."

I don't have the CD since this machine was given to me or I would try to install whatever it's prompting me for. But why would Windows Search prompt me for the MS Office 2000 CD in the first place?

Do I need to download a patch or something?

Thanks,

Sounds like something has gone awry with the settings in the registry.
[You click on "Find Files & Folders" and registry settings determine the response of the Windows shell (Explorer)].

Ideally you'd have a backup of the c: partition/drive taken when all was well.
Then you could re-format the C: partition/drive and restore the backup to "jump back" to a working system.
Then you'd try again to upgrade with SP2.

In the absence of a backup you could try to go to a suitable WinXP restore point.

Sylvander,

Thanks for your suggestion but such an operation is out of my league. I borrowed an Office 2000 CD for the purpose of reinstalling Excel and evidently the Installer installed. At least since I loaded Excel from the CD I have not been receiving that error message. I only installed Excel from the Office 2000 CD since I already have Word and Outlook and they're working properly. Does this Installer--and I'm still not sure what it is--automatically install from the CD?

In any event, apparently the problem has been resolved. Thanks for your consideration.
