what is sure:
compaq deskpro needs new system partition (new bios). i downloaded compaq rom-image, diagnostic tools and firmware upgrade and put it on diskette.
Diagnostic tool says "disk controller failure"
firmware upgrade grades firmware up (without comment)
setup - accessed through the diagnostic diskette, asks to boot machine and reports "cannot find ntldr" after reboot, even with hd untied.
i did format the disks under w2k and nt, but compaq progs emulate dos-format before installing.
If a boot with w98 start disk this problem does not occur, still it displays the error message "hard disk failure i can use the hd with other pc´s though
what is sure: this is really putting my nerves blank!

A system partition and a new BIOS are not the same thing. I've also found out the hard way that Compaq computers only can use Compaq hard drives. Is it possible the firmware update was for the wrong make/model?
