Hey guys, just curious about something. I am going to be using it soon, and I will be doing some research of my own, but what are some of the benefits of DDR2 memory?

Is it really that much great than DDR? I have heard some people talking about it using it less energy...

Ill look some stuff up on my own...

Thanks in advance...

DDR2 is the next step in PC RAM, although it's off to a slow start. For the time being, DDR2 shows little if any additional performance over DDR. Standard PC3200 DDR does just as well as standard PC2-4200 DDR2. The reasons being mainly that current bins of DDR2 chips are giving poor latencies, though that will greatly improve as DDR2 production ramps up and manufacturing techniques get better.

Technically speaking, DDR2 takes that next step in RAM the same way that DDR overtook SDRAM. DDR2 chips double, and then double again the speed of the chip in such a way that the I/O can run at 4 times the internal chip speed, thereby keeping the chip under what seems to be the max clock speed for RAM. A chip of DDR2 at 533MHz then runs at only 133MHz internally, instead of 266MHz for DDR, or 533MHz for SDRAM. Also, DDR2 uses BGA by default, and the voltage has again been decreased - down to a mere 1.8V. The max chip density has been increased to 4Gb, 4 times that of DDR. All this adds up to a much needed boost in RAM technology for the future.

But for today, DDR performs just as well, is more popular, and is cheaper, too! And in the case of AMD's CPU's, DDR is currently the only RAM supported! Like BTX, DDR2 will see its time come, but it's still off to a slow start...
