It is possible the chip could be slightly faulty, but here are some things to try:

1. Get a bios update for your board (http://www.abit-usa.com). This might update your board enough to handle a CPU of that magnitude (if it couldn't already).

2. After trying the above with no success try fiddling with settings in the CPU SOFT menu that should be in the BIOS of your Abit board. Setting the multiplier/FSB setting the 'User Defined' and then choosing the correct multiplier (17x100 I guess).

Sorry if this doesn't answer your problem, I'm not much of a P4 user http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks for you reply you were almost right. the error that occurred was :"CPU Is Unworkable Or Has Changed" Message During Boot.
It seems the mobo they sold me is not compatible for the P4 1.75. the bios needs updating. I cannot update as I get an audio alarm on trying so the board is going back to-day.
Thanks for your reply.

Generally if you need to update the BIOS in order to support a new CPU it needs to be done with a chip that is curretly supported. Also you need to disable the BIOS anti-virus protection (usually write protects the FlashROM) so that the update can be written to the chip.
