Hi,

I'm working on a friends PC. I posted before and the problem was that the PC was hanging at himem.sys. The diagnosis given was to try known working memory and if it still did the same then swap the motherboard.

so....

I changed the motherboard for a brand new PCCHIPS motherboard, reinstalled the processor, reinstalled the NEW memory and booted, set all the jumpers correctly, connected the IDE devices and then powered the machine.

When I booted for the first time it post beeped and I was able to enter the BIOS to setup the processor settings, drives etc. Then the machine reboots. It powers up (the processor fan starts and the hard drive makes the usual noises) but there is no post beep and there is no display. If I leave it for a good length of time and then reboot It will start up again but the BIOS settings are gone so I end up going round in circles.

The processor is a slot 1 P3 450, 128MB SDRAM 168 Pin PC100, 8gb HDD, Floppy, CD/DVD - Packard Bell (Pulsar Range in UK/Symphony elsewhere I believe).

To Summarise, It has had a new motherboard, new memory, CMOS battery and I even tried the power supply! Also I tried to take the motherboard & PSU and power it on a table, connected to the monitor and graphics card but the same happens so I guess it's not shorting on the case.

I am now very stuck!

Any help gratefully received
Brett

It won't be easy to get your hands on another Slot 1 processor; however, that might be the problem.....a defective cpu...the L1 or L2 cache may be bad, resulting in erratic behavior.

Check the CMOS clear jumper and make sure that it is in the Run (normal) setting and not the clear setting, also check for a piece of plastic underneath the battery...
