Hi claire,

This is usually caused by programs running in the background. If you press ctrl + alt + del you will see a list of programs that are running. You can "end task" all except systray and explorer. Then run defrag. Should work. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

There are two other options:

1) Defrag in safe mode

2) Buy Norton System Works and use the speed disk program. Faster than defrag

Good Luck

An even simpler and beter option would be to get ahold of the defrag.exe from a window's ME program.

The algorythim was updated from the old 95/98 version and it not only doesn't hang as much, but does a faster/better job than the old version.

Here's a link to download the newer defrag; WinMEdefrag (http://www.boogiejack.com/computer018.html) just rename your old defrag.exe to defrag.old, then extract this newer one to the same folder.

I like classicsoftware's #2 idea. Nortons SpeedDisk is my defrag utility of choice. But don't tell Bassman! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

I'd like to nominate this question for inclusion in the FAQ forum. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

I won't tell if you won't. But as you can guess, I have used speed disk since DOS 3.3

Im going with what steve said, its generally the result of a programme being run while the defrag is happening - in my case me playing solitaire while waiting for defrag to finish - if u cant be bothered to get fresh file for defrag, leave ur pc alone while it defrags and grab a coffee and put ya feet up for half an hour

Win ME Defragg is much faster than Norton, and free.

plus you don't have to stop everything else you're doing when you run it.

have to go with iisbob on this one.

Hi guys,

I don't know how long it takes to defrag in ME but...when I'm 3% fragmented Norton can take care of it in under 5 minutes and I don't have to shut anything down to do it. Maybe Bill got it right with ME! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

ill go with steve too. i think its programs running in the background.
I think my old computer did this and by closeing out all the programs in the background it would let defrag finish
