My system uses Mozilla Firefox v 1.0 for web browsing. It dials out and connects OK but it won't find any web sites. I get the message "ALERT: www.-------- could notbe found. Please check the name and try again"

I have mentioned Firefox but I don't think the problem is there because I tried another browser which I found on a magazine CD and it did the same thing.

I also get a problem with my Palm connection when trying to synchonise. "Your network connection is not properly configured (socket error 10091)"

Everything was fine until the other day. I have not loaded any new software and there is no other obvious cause.

Any clues anyone please?

Assuming you have dial-up as opposed to broad band. It could be:

1) Modem not configured correctly.

2) Dirty phone lines.

3) A problem with your ISP.

Start with #3 first and contact the tech support for your ISP.

See http://www.bookmark-master.com/socket-error-10091.html

I wonder if you could "jump back" to a set of good configuration files copied [automatically] before the problem arose?
Which OS are you using?
Is your "Path" ok and including "C\Windows"?

Download Winsock Fix (http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html) and run it. It has an option to make a registry backup, select it and backup your registry to any convenient folder, before applying the fix .

Click 'Fix' and apply the VB_Winsock fix, this will reset the TCP stack, delete the current registry values and import new working registry values.

If you use a custom "Hosts" file make sure to re-enable it after rebooting as this utility will replace it with a default one.
