 I have recently bought a motorola 56K v.92 data/fax internal PCI modem on ebay and it has come with its driver CD. I want to instal it on my desktop which has win 98. When I put the modem in the PCI slot the plug an play detects it as a PCI card and succesully loads its driver via the CD. However when I see it in the device Manager it appears as SM56WDM device with a yellow error indication. Further drilling reveals an error message that NTKERN.VXD device loader for this device could not load the device driver etc.

Aparently I can successfully install Motorola SM56speakerphone modem via control panel/add modem. However, when I go to the diagnostic, no modem is detected.
Where am I going wrong? The CD that came with the modem contains only the drivers and a manual. there is no installtion or setup program in it.Because the device is detected by the plug an play.

Any advice/ suggestion from readers will be greatly appreciated.

Motorola don't have the best history for supporting their modems.

Maybe you should read/post on the TechTips site that deals with this area.

You could also try booting into safe mode (F8 during startup) and uninstalling all references to modems in Control Panel's Add/Remove and from Device Manager. Then reboot and try installing afresh by specifically pointing the Add New Hardware wizard to the driver files on the installation CD or by trying drivers downloaded from the web in place of the ones on the CD.

If your are using a modem with a motorola chip you could be screwed. The only way iI could get mine to set itself to the correct COM port was to use the device manager to delete it and then check for new devices. This usually puts it on the correct Com
