View Full Version : mice is not being recognised
My computer is not recognising my mouse.
I have tried with two separate mice.
What shall I do?
I am not very used to navigating around without a mouse.
One of the mice has no accompanying software and is said to be recognised with windows, but it is not being recognised?
The other one has drivers accompanying it on a floppy.
I have installed the drivers by doing
A:\setup
Then it goes through setup process and then asks to restart computer.
After rebooting it, the mouse is still not recognised.
I have reloaded windows 98 on the computer and whilst it goes through the process of installing windows. For example
1) Windows will scan your computer...
2) Windows will install drivers...
3) Windows will install hardware...
And it gives the remaining time on the corner, for example 30 minutes for completion. A strange phenomenon occurs where the mouse is activated and I can move it.
But when windows 98 has finished the mouse is not recognised.
Why??? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif
Note Windows installation is not a complete fresh install that is I have not formatted the hard disk but am very tempted to do so.
Ok, does the mouse actually work all the time or just during the installation process?
What shows up under device manager?

I have looked under the mouse icon, I think I have a mice problem.
It has 4 other mouse devices, here they are as depicted in device manager:
!(mouse picture) compaq internal Trackball PS/2
!(mouse picture) compag ps/2 Port mouse
(mouse picture) HID compliant mouse
!(mouse picture) standard serial mouse
Note the mouse icon 3 has no exclamation mark.
What do I do, I have tried more then one mouse?

I have a few questions.
Does windows give you a message about a mouse not being connected?
Is your mouse serial or ps2? or usb?
What make and model of mouse do you have?
Please advise. If you can get a serial mouse to work, it will be easier than trying to remove them with keyboard commands.
Please post back.
Talk to you soon

NOw I dont know how this sounds to everyone else but it seems as if you have too many mice installed. This means that the PC doesn't know which one to use.
Only keep on the system the mouse you are using and that should solve the problem.
If it still doesnt work, try updated drivers for the mouse off the manufacturers website, and if that still doesnt work you may have a problem with the particular port that it is plugged into, be it serial or ps2. Check that these are enabled in the bios and that there are no other problems in the system about these ports.
Also this may sound a bit of a silly question, but is the ps2 mouse you are using plugged into the mouse ps2 port and not the keyboard ps2 port (-and before anyone says something about if it was in the keyboard one, then how would he type to the forum, well he may have the older 5pin din at style connector for the keyboard...)

NO
>Is your mouse serial or ps2? or usb?
It is one that is capable to be used on both serial and ps2.
I am using the 9 pin female serial.
>What make and model of mouse do you have?
The one I have connected at present is a mouse with no added software/diskette accompanying it.
It is children's novelty mouse from Disney with another party I think it’s coolmouse because their website is also listed on the packages.
The other mouse is a Genius mouse (this has separate diskette), this one is not installed.

! (mouse picture) Compaq internal Trackball PS/2 (** have deleted **)
! (mouse picture) Compaq ps/2 Port mouse (** have deleted **)
(mouse picture) HID compliant mouse (***kept ****)
! (mouse picture) standard serial mouse (** have deleted **)
I have kept mouse 3 because it is the only one without '!' (exclamation mark)
I have rebooted the computer the mouse is still not showing, I do not get error message from windows saying mouse is not being recognised at bootup
When I go into device manager I am no longer able to see under the mouse icon.
For example before I deleted all other mouse, the mouse icon was expanded.
How do I expand the tree structure similar to Explorers tree structure without a mouse? For example with a mouse to expand to see below a level you click on '+' and to clasp the tree you press on '-'.

You shouldn't have to.
If they have the ! through them the tree should show up expanded.
Please advise.
Tubothy,
That is exactly the right track.......
Dek,
You need to try this in safe mode, it is likely that there are more showing up there too. You will want to remove all of the mice shown. If the mouse you are using is using a serial-ps/2 adapter then the HID compliant one is the wrong one.

I can go into safe mode at boot time by pressing f5.
For some peculiar reason the mouse that is plugged in at present the novelty serial-ps2 mouse works perfectly in safe mode??
That is I am able to open applications, use it, and close it using the mouse.
In save mode since the mouse works I can expand the tree.
Under the mouse icon is the
"HID-compliant mouse showing"
As mjc has said that "HID compliant one" is the wrong one since I am using a serial-ps mouse, I can delete this??
I am on the assumption that if I delete the mouse icon for HID-compliant mouse windows will automatically load the mouse that is on port serial-ps2 adapter that is the novelty mouse since it has no accompanying software???
under safe mode I have deleted the
'HID-compliant mouse'
When I reboot under normal mode no mouse icon shows.
My mouse is not activated as I have origionally assumed.
When I bootup in safe mode my mouse is again activated.
This time no mouse icon is showing in the device manager.
I have noticed that there is a question mark which I cannot recall being there before.
If I expand the question mark another question mark icon is displayed beside which is written "unknown device".
What shall I do?
I would like to solve problem today.
The question mark is your mouse without any driver support, use the Add New Hardware wizard and add a standard ps/2 mouse...

I have added most of the options for standard mouse apart from USB becuase I know it is not this definitely but still it is not working.
I have tried with the mouse from Genius, installed accompanying software and still not working.
Both works under safe mode.
What can I do?
Could it be IRQ conflicts?
What else could be causing the problem?
Ok, time to start checking other areas...
Are you sure that the "disable in this profile" box is not checked?
What resources is the mouse using (in Normal Mode)?
Is there an entry in Add/Remove Programs for any mouse software?
Since it works in Safe Mode we know the PS/2 port is working...so that is not the problem. Have you tried the serial mouse connected to the serial port?
