I have got an unknown PCI device that is not loaded in my Win2k configuration. Can someone tell me how I can find out what it is as I have no idea what it can be as I have loaded all my drivers.

I have found on systems that i have built and fixed that the unknown pci device can sometimes be a section of hardware related to the soundcard - i.e. surround sound, game ports, etc... the easiest way to find out what it is, is to go through the cards plugged into the motherboards pci slots and see which ones are installed under a known name - i.e. modems, graphics sound etc.... and then by means of elimination see what is left over

i.e. say u have a modem, a graphics card and a soundcard plugged into your motherboard, and only the modem and graphics cards are installed under known items, then it is gonna b ur sound card.

If it is "unknown" then it is likely that the card u r using is of a generic or unbranded company that is not known through microsoft at time of production - if everything works u shudnt have to worry

I have also seen the "unkown PCI device" show up, when for some reason, PnP decides that an already installed device is "new hardware"...much more common in 98 and even more common in ME.

Hi scroatbagg,

I've seen this a couple of times. A friend had this situation on his Win98se machine. I just rebooted to safemode, removed the unknown device and rebooted. It was gone. Everything works good. If you're sure all your devices are listed and workin'...well, that's what I did. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

What I was saying in the first reply is that under certain circumstances 98 and more so ME will just add them in (even when everything is running fine)...the fix I have used is just like Steve suggested.......

This has happened to me. You could remove it in safe mode and upon reboot windows would again pick it up. I was not too worried because all devices were working. I went into device manager and disabled it. It was not picked up by windows any more.

For remove it, You find its mainboard driver and update mainboard chipset by running setup.exe program for chipset.
Try once. Have fun.
