I'm trying to fix a friends PC with a check sum error. I've changed the battery so its not that. What are the next steps?

When you get the checksum error, are you allowed to hit DEL (or F1) to enter setup? If so, enter setup and change the BIOS settings or go to
"load fail-safe settings"

If you cannot go into BIOS setup and the computer won't post past "CMOS checksum error"....

Follow this...
When you changed the battery did you clear CMOS? (move CMOS jumper to pins 1&2 for about one minute and then moved it back)

You should have cleared CMOS, removed the battery for abour 20 minutes, unplugged the power supply and removed the connectors from the motherboard.

Then try to connect everything back and boot up. If this still doesn't work, your friend may have a corrupted BIOS and may have to get another chip.
(this JUST happened to my PC last week!)

What kind of motherboard/processor does he have?

Let me know!

Del of F1 does nothing.

Its actually the second time this has happened the first time I changed the battery the PC started fine.

Its been ok for about a month then it happened again. We changed the battery again and its still erroring. I'll be picking the PC up some time this week.

I think its a packard bell pc, I'll post the spec when I pick it up
