Well basically, my problem is that whenever my computer freezes and I can't do anything, my only option left is to manually power down by pushing and holding down the power button for several seconds. However, most of the time when I manually shut down, the system will automatically power up again.
To be more specific, here's what usually happens: First thing that happens is my system locks up.

Second, I push and hold down the power button for several seconds, until the system shuts down. Then I let go of the power button, at this point, the computer will all of a sudden boot up all by itself after several seconds.

Because of this problem, I am thinking of getting a new case, but am reluctant to spend another $50-$100 for another "nice" case. Perhaps the power button or something on the inside got damaged?

I have had my computer since April of 2004, and I only began to encounter this problem approximately a month ago. The case is a Raidmax Scorpio 668.

PcguideUser Welcome ot the forums.

STOP! Do not buy another case (just yet) The problem is more than likely software related, and there are known shutdown issues with XP. Have a look at the following link to see if it will help.

No, my problem is not software related. It seems to be hardware related. The power button on my case seems to be malfunctioning. (ie when I push it down to turn it off, it will shut down, but several seconds later the computer will boot up again.) Is there any way I could fix this problem, or am I better off shelling out another $50-$100 for a new case?

When you click on the desktop and go to Properties\ScreenSaver\Power\Advanced

What are the setting in there?

It is possible that it is set to go onto standbye when the power button is pushed. If this is what it is set at it would just take you to nudge the mouse or keyboard to re-start the computer. Just change it "shutdown when I push the power button"

It could also be a faulty switch. If the contacts "bounce" when operated, a momentary contact would be enough to restart the computer.

Try disconnecting the switch from the motherboard, and switching on and off, using a screwdriver to short the switch terminals on the motherboard. If that works OK, a replacement switch may be all you need.
