Last night I was shutting my computer down, accidently hit the power stripe with my foot before it shut all the way down. Now XP won't start. It tries then comes to a screen that says "Xp didn't start please choose a mode to start"
Then I can choose from:
Safe Mode,
Safe MOde with networking,
Safe Mode (With something else, can't remember)
Last known good Configuration,
Start Windows normally.
Well I have tried safe mode, last known good config, and windows normally and it always comes back to the same screen.
My setup is win 98 on main hard disk, with XP on slave hard disk. It comes to the dual boot screen and I can get into 98. But if I choose XP then I get the above.
What can I do? Thanks!

1.Do you have two seperate hard disks ?
2.Did you see any error message when you tried "safe mode, last known good config, and windows normally"?

Yes I have two hard disks, 98 on one XP on the other.
No error messages, tries to boot into XP, the it resets itself then I get the screeen with the choices, then choose "safe mode" goes to boot then it restarts itself again and goes back to that screen.

If your 98 disk is a FAT32 partition, then use your startup floppy to run scandisk on it, this should fix the corrupted boo ldr files, if not then you may have to insert your XP CD and choose the repair option to repair your XP installation.

If my XP drive is NTFS the can you use the 98 disk to run scan disk? I didn't think you could.
As far as the XP CD repair option, I am pretty sure I have to be able to get into XP first before it can run repair. And I can't get into xp at all.

Assuming that your computer supports it (you usually need to boot into the BIOS and change the boot options), you can boot from the XP CDROM directly into the recovery console, where you can troubleshoot and repair your installation (you would probably start by running chkdsk, XPs version of scandisk). An overview from microsoft is at :

John is right. I had a similar problem recently. I can't remember what happened exactly to cause it (bad short term memory) but I do remember that it would not boot and said something like, XP is damaged or corrupted or something so I didn't even get the option of booting to it. Anyways, just go to bios, change the boot sequence so that you boot of of XP cd, then go to repair and it will give you the dos console I think. Then you type something like "chdsk -r" (pretty sure that's wrong but its something like that). Anyways, just type help at the console and you'll find a list of commands including the one I mentioned. Run it, wait for many many minutes and it should hopefully be ok.

Ok guys, I got into the recovery mode. I had to go throught the installation steps until I got to the recovery option. Anyway I ran the chkdsk, and it says there is one or more errors, then goes back to the D:WINDOWS/ prompt. What do I do next? Thanks again

Do exactly what you did before, except instead of running "chkdsk" run "chkdsk d: /r" (and chkdsk c: /r, etc. for the rest of your drives). The r flag tells the program to fix the errors that it finds. If that works, you are (hopefully) done.
