bought Belkin 10/100 ethernet desktop network PCI card for my E Machines computer which did not have 10/100 net allready built in...computer operates under Windows ME operating system

When I installed card, it seemed to install OK....but then everything went wrong...as far as I could figure out was some incompatability with Computer Associates eTrust EZ Armor antivirus program which I had just paid my 29 dollars for since my 1 year free version was about to expire

When I tried to get help from Computer Associates, got very little...similar situation with phone call to Belkin...

Has anyone had similar problems with trying to install a 10/100 net PCI card? Or know how to deal with this problem...

NIC cards can be fussy sometimes, are you able to ping the NIC internally?
(ping 127.0.0.0)
I would try uninstalling the NIC driver from Device Manager in SAFE mode, reboot, and then Windows should detect the card and ask for drivers, also be absolutely certain you are loading the correct NIC card driver for your OS, you want to have Windows list the drivers in specific location, then direct it (usually to the floppy with the driver on it).

The main problem installing NIC's under Win9X which includes 95,98, and ME is usually there are not enough free IRQ's. Some things can share an IRQ, but a NIC is fussy and usually will NOT.

Step one: Check Device Manager for any problems with the card and report them.

Step two: Under device manager, list devices by connection and choose IRQ and you should see the IRQ list. Please post what IRQ the NIC is assigned to, if anything else is assigned to that IRQ and what IRQ's are free.

Step three: Do you have any on board serial ports, COM1 and COM2. If you do, do you use them. If NOT, we can disable them in the bios and free up an IRQ in the lower range where NIC cards prefer to live.

Step four: Post the information from 1-3 above back here for review.

However, this doesn't speak to the problem with antivirus program which appeared to be conflicting with installation of NIC driver... am too tired to work on machine this evening....will physically install card tomorrow, turn on computer and snooze antivirus before (plugandplay) starts the installation of NIC driver and see what happens....if still problems will do what you suggested in above quote....

What do you think?

I don't think the AV had anyting to do with it. I think it is a coincidence. That's why I posted what I did.

What eveidence is here the AV interfered with the installation of the NIC.

If you are sure, uninstall the AV.

Re-install the NIC It should work

Re-install the AV.
