What is responsible for error message: Error in loading DLL and how is this problem corrected?
Budfred

You are going to need to provide a lot more information than that if you want help... One possibility is a malware infection, but it could be a number of other things as well... The exact message and the name of the DLL would help... Also, what have you done to try to fix the problem and so on...

Thanx for the response.
This is all I can tell you or anybody.
On the status bar I get this message: Error on Page. If I double click on this this message will appear: Error loading dll. No identity of dll file is given. Reference is usually made to a line # or a character. That is it.
It would seem to a novice like I am that some mechanism needed to load some (or all) dll files is missing, zapped, corrupt or whatever.
Again, thanx for your interest. If with the info. I supplied you can point me in some direction that would yield positive results I'd appreciate it.
I use wincows 98 as my operating system. How far could I go wrong if I reinstalled it?
Budfred
02-25-2005, 12:57 PM
Reinstalling it would be okay on a clean system, but the problem may be that you are infected with malware... I suggest that you download and run a set of scans including: Ad-Aware SE (install and update first), Spybot (install and update first), an online virus scan and then run a HijackThis log and post it here...
To run HJT, extract it to a permanent folder such as one
you create like C:\HJT. Close all open windows and
browsers and make sure that all programs are enabled if
you use msconfig. Run it and Scan, then Save the log.
When the log window appears, Right click to Copy it, open
your browser and come here to Paste the entire log. Do
not make any changes until it is checked since most items
are either benign or essential to the computer. Break it up to more than one post if it won't fit into only one...

Again thanx for responding. I will attack the possible existence of malware in my system, according to your suggestions, in the future.
Wonder, however, whether my explanation regarding the error message made any sense to you!? And if it further points to the existence of malware!?
Also, I earlier posted a description of some of the problems that occur due to the dll loading problem. See posting titled accessing links.
Finally, I've scanned all files for viruses and errors. One was found infected and one was corrupted. Both were repaired.

The reason I suggested scanning for malware is that the rather vague info you have posted continues to suggest that... Please proceed with scans and provide a HJT log... Also, please post details of what was found and fixed already including which scans you ran...

do you still get the dll error message?
Quantax

If you can determine the exact name of the dll related file, then run a search on where it's located(using the "find files and folders" selection and type that file name in the "named" line), then right click and rename the .dll to .old.
Otherwise, if you can determine the program associated with this file, then you should uninstall and reinstall to see if that works.

No. And I am not experienced enough w/ computers to determine any way to do that.
But the error message which says: "Error in loading dll file", seems to implicate not the dll file itself but some other device, program, file, etc., etc., that is needed to do that.
Thanx for your response.
If you have any other thoughts on the matter I'd appreciate your sharing them w/ me.

Yes, the message appears as an alert on the status bar.
I don't know what your statement use the usable means.
Thanks for responding.
If you have any further constructive thought I'd appreciate them.
Thanks again.

If this dll error message has just now come up you could try this:
Restart and while the computer boots up, keep tapping the F8 key to access the startup options menu. You then select the one that says "Starting with the command prompt" and hit ENTER. Then at the C:> prompt, type in "scanreg /restore"(but without the quotation marks). A new screen appears and you'll see five consecutive dates. Pick any one far enough before the error came up. Then hit ENTER. Then reboot.
Let us know if that fixes it.

another option which may correct the problem is to run the system file check program and scan for invalid versions and corrupted systemfiles and dll files etc.
go to the start menu and click "run" and type CMD followed by the enter key
then type: sfc /scannow
that could correct the problem

He has Win98 so if he's going to do a file check, he would go from Start to run and type in SFC in the dialog box.

Tried this suggestion some time ago while working w/ the tech support people from Dell. The five dates that came up were later than when the error first occured. On the basis of this they suggested a reinstall of windows 98. I was going to do that but was advised to reinstall the OS only after cleaning up my system of any malware that might be there now.
Thanx for your interest.
Will gratefully welcome any other of your ideas.

I don't know for sure that malware is implicated with the problem. Given the information I supplied in that post some guru in response suggested that it might be.
I appreciate your attempt---and his---at being helpful though I must admit that I don't know how posting a Hijack this log (whatever that is) is going to get to the root of the problem.
Have a happy day and get back to me if you feel like it.

A Hijack this log will enable us to see if malware is causing your problems, and also give us a better idea of what is running on your computer.
Please download http://tools.zerosrealm.com/hjt.zip (http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip)
Copy it into its own folder, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".
When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log, do Ctrl-A to Select All, and copy its contents here. Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Budfred will pass final judgement on your log but after looking at it I have a couple of questions that move in a slightly different direction.
1) What are you attempting to do when this error displays?
2) Have you checked Device Manager (My Computer/Properties/Hardware/Device Manager) to see if you have a driver issue? This smells like one. You'll see a question mark (?) or an exclamation mark (!) over one or more of the entries if you do have a driver problem.

1.No question mark or exclamation point over any entries.
2.Alert appears on status bar along with message error on page or it may also read "done, but with error(s) on page. If I click on alert for details all I get is message "error in loading dll file".

First, I'm not the estimable Budfred. Those shoes are way to big for me to fill. Next, I think we are closer. You didn't answer one of the important questions (what you are doing) but I know now. You're in a browser, likely Internet Exploder. The 'error on page and/or "done, but with error(s) on page" just means Exploder didn't load something, maybe a Flash applett or something similar. This could be due to one or more of your security settings or maybe due to a protective program preventing it. I've had it happen many times when I used to use Exploder.
My opinion ... ignore it. Use Exploder only for WindozeUpdate. Use FireFox for surfing.

Except for the fact that you have a Rogue antispyware program, this log looks clean... This is considered Rogue and you can read more about it in the link below:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpyKiller] C:\Program Files\SpyKiller\spykiller.exe /startup
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
I recommend that you uninstall it...
Also, it looks like you may be running more than one antivirus program and that could be the problem... You can have two installed, but only one should be active since they will conflict with each other in rather unpredictable ways... Same thing with firewalls... You need one, but two can cause problems...

If we're now under assumption that computer is clean of malware would a reinstall of Windows 98 be appropriate. If so is that a hassle?

You appear to be free of malware, you are not crashing, you are not complaining of slowness. The only problem described here is Exploder telling you something stopped it from loading something. Reinstall if you insist...I don't think it's worth the effort nor do I think the symptoms call for it. Download FireFox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) and be done with IE.

Sorry Pop-Pop. I'm all thumbs when it comes to posting messages. Hope you weren't inconvenienced.
IE works pretty well for me even with the alert and or error message. It interferes w/ my accessing some links and downloads but I've found ways to work around most.
Lastly you're right that IE is not loading something. It's a, or, maybe, several dll files. I guess what I would like to find out somehow is what is preventing IE from loading the dll(s). I'd recommend the solver of that problem for a Nobel prize in computers.
Peace.

It is unlikely that reinstalling Win98 will solve the problem you note and it is likely that doing a reinstall over a current install will eventually destabilize the system... Unless you are prepared to wipe the drive and start with a clean install, I wouldn't bother...
It would be a good idea to check Windows Updates to see if you IE is completely up to date with security patches...
I am guessing that the error messages you are getting are due to one of the protection programs you have blocking something, but it isn't something that shows up in HJT... I didn't read back over the thread to see if you ran an online virus scan and a trojan scan, but you could do that to see if there is still an issue... If the problem isn't found, we could try a deeper scan and see if that picks up anything...
Also, please double check to make sure you have only one antivirus running... I see evidence of McAfee and Norton in your log... It is possible that one is antivirus and the other is providing some other protection, but that is unusual....

Guru's,.
Norton or Symantec's utilities, as like SpeedDisk, aren't mentioned much these days as far as I can see lately. If they've been installed for a long time, you may get some .dll errors, just a guess.
It looks like only 2 Norton utilities are being used in this 'case' but I don't recognize either. One, could just be their firewall, as I don't see one in the log. The other looks like crash protection?!?
Ahhh, Google is our friend and it refreshed my short/long term memory... :o
Norton Protect is a modified Recycle Bin. I don't use it (anymore). I don't even use the Recycle Bin at all. I have it set that when I delete a file, it goes into cyberspace. Poof!

We may still be able to repair the .dll errors but knowing what else we are working with, could steer us to a more expedient fix.

Norton Utilities I installed shortly after I bought my computer. McAfee antivirus was original equipment installed by Dell. Both seemed to like each other for almost five years. Mr problem(s) started shortly into 2005. Norton provides crash protection and helps w/ maintenance, i.e. scanning for disk errors, recovering deleted files, etc. etc.
I've done a couple of virus scans. No problems found. Trojan scan I've not done cause I don't know how.

For saving a screen shot, download this (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,23220,00.asp). and install it. The icon (a small black cat) will appear on your desktop after the install. Open Device Manager as described earlier. Double click the Purrint black cat icon to make the applet start. Now, on your keyboard, find the key that says "Print Screen". Click that once and a window will open showing a thumbnail of your screen. There should be an option to "Save as". Save it as a .jpg somewhere on your computer. You can now attach/add that image to your post to help these guys. There are instructions here somewhere on how to include images in your post. Hopefully it'll be small enough that size will not be an issue.
As for my suggestion "to dump" IE, let me be more precise. Stop using IE. You cannot dump it, Windoze will not let you and you need it for WindozeUpdate. IE is trouble, always has been. Even M$ knows that and tacitly admits it.
You've had Norton and McAfee for 5 YEARS? Would the AV be up-to-date? HAve you ever run Live Update on the Norton Utilities?

Actually, you don't need a screenshot if you follow the instructions I posted for an Uninstall list... It will give us a thorough list of all programs that can be uninstalled on your system...
To run a trojan scan download the trial version of TrojanHunter or TDS3 and let it update as you install it, then run it to find and fix any trojan files on your system...
http://www.trojanhunter.com/
or
http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/
I also would advocate using FireFox or another browser like Netscape or Opera, but, as pop pop says, don't "dump" IE since it is integrated into WinXP there is no safe way to remove it... Just don't use it...

Before I get the list from the device managerfor you to ponder, I thought this might be a good opportunity to provide more details, amplify and/or supplement info. concerning the problems associated w/ the error message concerning loading dll'.s One other problem that occurs has to do with accessing links.
I subscribe to the online edition of the NY Times, for example. Their news stories & headlines frequently provide links to sites where additional info. about the story can be obtained. If I click on these links I'm taken to the site where the info. appears and I am educated accordingly. That makes me happy. I also subscribe to a website called Medscape where I can obtain info. on what's going on in the health care field. Their news stories also provide links. If I click on those, however, nothing happens. The address bar on my computer remains blank and I am made to feel unhappy. This phenomenon occurs with other info. sources as well. Some have links that I get info. from, others fail. With some where I have been denied initial access I have found that if I right click on the link, add the link or website address provided to my favorites list then click on the addres which is now on the favorites list I can gain access to the site w/ the additional info. But again with some websites that won't happen.
Downloading is equally a problem. For example, I was able to downoad programs to run Spybot-SD, Ad-Aware, and Hijack this. But recently I tried to download an udate to my income tax program and couldn't get it done. My attempt ended in a blank screen and interaction w/ my computer at that point impossible. It's all very frustrating. Perhaps you or anyone else who this info. is available to would like to consider what I've detailed and offer suggestions I'd appreciate it. Learning new ways to do things always makes me happy.

By the way, in your post you suggested that I download a colored and underlined "this". When I did. My address bar went blank and I had to close the try.

There is no need to do a screenshot if you follow Budfred's suggestion of a feature of HJT that I was not aware of. Otherwise I would have never suggested one.
The websites you are having trouble with sound like you may have something like Java disabled or blocking of some other type. You could post where one of the links are that you cannot open and we may be able to tell why. Pop pop's link opens up just fine for me.

My stupidity is once again shown for I know not what you mean by posting one of the links. Do you mean the address of the link itself, the name of the link? The title of the information site where the link was embedded? Help?!!! If the link Pop-Pop provided wouldn't open for me how better can I identify or describe it to you and others?

I don't see anything in your list that looks bad... I think you may just have a problem with your IE and you can try an IE Repair to see if that will fix it... Here is how MS suggests doing it:

If you can't get there, I suggest trying FireFox and see if you can get there with it...

Your prompt reply is/was apprecitated.
Tried to access the link you provided by clicking on it. I was not surprised when I couldn't get there that easily. But my workaround, i.e. adding the link to my favorites list, then going from there saved the day and I got to the microsoft support site. Alas, I think, the support refers to the repair of IE when associated w/ Windows XP. Any suggestions?
P.S. And the warnings about editing the registry scare me.
P.P.S. One last bit of info for you to ponder. Shortly after this problem showed up and on the advice of Dell's Tech Support I uninstalled the original version of IE that was on my PC and installed IE 6 (I was told the latestversion) from a brand new CD that Microsoft sent me for the price of shipping.
Any thoughts you have on all this would be helpful. Thanx for perhaps the hundreth time.

Starting w/ the link to Microsoft(MS) you provided I was able, I believe, to determine that MS no longer provides much support to us Windows 98 people.
Followed the link provided by Quantax in his/hers latest post and found I'd used that repair when working w/ Dell people. But I still have one or two dll files that they suggested to load and I'll go from there.
Also still must download and run the Trojan horse program that was suggested. Following that I'll go the Firefox route.
How much of that I'll get done today I don't know. Tomorrow I'm going on a 4-day vacation. Will check in w/ all you people when I get back.
Though this problem is frustrating trying to find a solution to it w/ your & others help its a bit of fun and I think I may be learning a little about computer technology. But more importantly I'm learning how much knowledge is out there in PC Guide land and how willing some people are to share it. To an old cynic/skeptic like me that's not easy to understand.
Thanx. See ya!

Downloaded trojan hunter per your suggestion. Ran two quick scans and one full scan w/ it. No trojans detected.
Tried to download Firefox but the glitch in my system for some reason won't let me do that. Why I'm able to download some programs and not others is another part of this whole mystery. I can order a CD from Firefox and proceed w/ an installation of that browser by that route. It'll cost a few bucks but at this point seems to be the only option left save for uninstalling Windows 98 and the reinstalling same. And there's no guarantee that'll be the solution.
Have to say at this point, and despite all your and others help, I may be chasing rainbows.

Since nothing that I tried to do recently has solved the problem discussed in many posts on subject I went back to the article you provided and proceeded through the routine the article suggested. Each dll file was loaded successfully except the last one on the Microsoft list.
That dll file was Shell 32.dll.
When I tried to put this through the run routine I received the following error message "Load Library (shell) failed. Get last error 0X0000001F".
I haven't a clue as to what that means. Do you by any chance?

I am afraid I can't tell you what that message means, I always find MS's cryptic messages to be a pain... you may be able to track it down in the MS Knowledge Base....
As for FireFox, if you know someone with a fast internet connection and a CD burner, just ask that person to burn FireFox onto a disk for you....
Also, I am wondering if we took a look in your HOSTs file?? If not, open HJT and select Config... choose Misc Tools and click on "Open HOSTs file manager"... choose to open in Notepad and then Copy/Paste the result here...

Woe is me!!!!
Thanx for your suggestion re Firefox. Actually I'd already had gone ahead and ordered a CD from supplier. It cost less than $10 and that shouldn't break the bank. Should have thought to go the route you suggested, myself since my married daughter has a high speed line and a CD burner. Actually, I used it exactly in the way you suggested to get an updated version of Nero 6 burning ROM a while back. Not thinking very clearly these days.
Had no luck getting the Hosts file. When I went through the routine you suggested I got the following alert message from HJT. "Cannot find Hosts file. Do you want to create a new default host file".
Did I do something wrong? Please advise.
Also found out that I'm now unable to print any material from online sources. Don't know the reason for that. Could that problem again implicate my browser.
For your info. I am able to print files created offline.
Things are gettin curiouser and curiouser.

I would let HJT create a new default HOSTs file... It is possible that at least some of the problems are caused by a hijacked HOSTs file...

I don't now know if I did or didn't. But somehow I got the info. that I forwarded to you. Going through the routine again I don't see any option for creating a new default file. Must ask you again for help in getting HJT to create a new Hosts file. I'll try again on my own, but I'd feel more comfotable getting directions from one knowledgeable about what to do. Okay, we will try looking at your HOSTS file the manual way... Go here:
C:\WINDOWS\HOSTS
and open the HOSTS file with Notepad or Wordpad... Copy whatever is there and Paste that here... Don't change anything in it until we can look at it....

If that is your active HOSTS file it is probably not the problem... It might be a good idea to search your system for any other HOSTS files using the Search command... It should just be HOSTS without an extension...
Otherwise, it would be a matter of doing some other scans... We have done most of the standard ones.... We can try a couple of more deep scans...
http://www.mwti.net/antivirus/free_utilities.asp
When you run this scan, it will produce a log in the lower right hand corner... Use Ctrl-C to copy that log after highlighting it and then post it here...
Please download RootkitRevealer.exe and unzip it into a folder. Run a scan and produce a log...
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/rootkitreveal.shtml
When it is done, go to File and select Save...
Include the log in your next reply.
Do not worry if there are a large number of items, this is normal.
It is a deep scan which will take a considerable amount of time, I suggest you disconnect from the internet and leave the PC alone until its finished.
To reduce the size of the log posted here, please edit out items that appear in these folders if there are some:
C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT
C:\System Volume Information
before you post the log....
We can see if anything shows up in these... If not, you are almost certainly clean and the problem is something else...

I will download both programs that you suggest, provided my system will allow me to do that. It is, as you know, finicky about what it allows me to download. I will run the scans, if possible, & forward the info to you.
Some other info. I should have provided to you earlier. The other day I ran a search for Hosts file(s). This is what I came up with:
Name In folder Size Type
Hosts C:\Windows 1 KB Sample File
LMHosts " 4 KB "
Hosts " 1 KB File
Hosts C:\Prog. Files 27 KB Spyware Supplement
I clicked on all four files The first three contained no information that I hadn't already sent to you.
The fourth related to the Spybot SD I downloaded to run the scan for malware. That scan produced no untoward info. I don't suppose anything in that file search is of consequence but in the interest of completeness I thought I best include it.
And, as always, thanks for your time, interest and expertise.

Thanks for the info. Briefly, my status is that I was not able to create a log file with Rootkit revealer. When I tried to run the scan an error message developed indicating some illegal operation was occuring. Tried this twice once w/ all programs running once with all programs closed or disabled. Same result.
Was able to run a deep scan with the anitvirus utility you suggested. It produced a log that seemed to go on forever. I've decided to go back & to break up the scan, first doing memory check, then registry check start up folder check, system folder etc. etc till all options for checking have been completed. I'll send to you copies of the log files created piecemeal. If you have any problems with this plan let me know.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner... All you need to post is the error section of the MWavScan... That is what I use to see if there is anything else lurking that might be a problem....

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner... All you need to post is the error section of the MWavScan... That is what I use to see if there is anything else lurking that might be a problem....
I want to sure I understand what to do. Please bear w/ me.
The MWav utility provides opportunity to run a number of scans. Shall I check all options or just certain ones. I'm guessing that the error section is at the end of each log file and that is what is to be highlighted, copied and forwarded to you for review. Is this correct?

I am afraid that when I run the scan on my system it comes up clean, so I can't tell you exactly where the bad files are listed... I think they will be evident when you see them though...
It would probably be a good idea to run all the options to make sure we find anything that might be there...

I've run three scans, one each of the memory check option, the registry check option and the system folder option. Looking through the results area of the scan I have not seen any notice of viruses or errors found. I'll now go through, I think, the four scans remaining that are given as options. If any show the slightest possibility of a problem I will be sure to let you have a look at it.
Thanx for hanging in there w/ me my PC's problems.
Oh!, while I've got your attention, can the Mwav utility be set up to scan my system automatically and periodically. If so can you tell me how this can be done.

Finally got around to running the remaining scans w/ MWav not done earlier. None of these or none done earlier showed any viruses within the system. The results section of one scan noted two errors, but no explanation of what those errors were. I looked at the entire log file of that scan. Nothing jumped out at me as being amiss. Ran that particular scan again. Second time results showed no errors. Don't know what to make of all that.
In summary then, it seems, at least to a novice like I am, that my system is free of malware and the problem earlier described is due to something only someone much wiser than I can figure out.
Oh yeah, I never received the firefox CD I ordered and paid for. I may have been scammed since several E-mail contacts w/ mozilla.org regarding the order have not been answered. I think I'll go w/ Plan B, i.e., the one you suggested a while back. I'm still eager to see if the problem resides w/ Internet Explorer.
Any further thoughts by you will be appreciated.

I think the only way to set MWavScan to do regular scans is to buy the program they keep pushing and I don't recommend that... I would just go with a standard antivirus program like AVG or Avast and put other protections in place... I don't trust MWavScan to not delete the wrong things if it runs automatically...
As for FireFox, I suspect it is just taking longer to get there than you expected... The Mozilla people have a good reputation and would be unlikely to risk that by pulling scams... If you bought it from someone other than Mozilla, it may have been a scam...
There may still be something wrong with your system, but I am afraid that I am not sure what else we can do to figure it out either... I did just figure out why RootKitRevealer didn't work... I forgot you are running Win98.... It won't run on Win9x systems... It is possible that you have a RootKit and I am not sure how to check for it on Win98... If I find out, I will come back and proceed with that...
Meanwhile, here is my prevention speech with some ideas to stay clean (if you are)....
This is a good time to set up protection against further
attacks. Read the article linked below about "How did I
get infected". You need an antivirus that is updated, a
good firewall (a router firewall is not enough) and a
spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads.
All of these have good free versions available... be very
cautious about any security software that advertises in
popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually
useless, but also often have malware in them....

A thousand thanks for all your help, advice and most of all patience.
Too bad, I guess, that we couldn't get to the root of my PC problem. It(the problem) is a little frustrating but something that I've been able to cope with.
Somewhere along the line I saw that reference about tightening security of PC's. I had the webaddress on my favorites list and looked at what they recommended but put it off doing it while I worked w/ you.
Finally. I got an apologetic response from the Mozilla people. It was one of those "canned" replies, but at least they replied. I'm hoping that Firefox will get me back to browsing and downloading free of annoyances. And if that works I'll let you know whether you want me to or not.
Just one more question......
In a post way back some knowledgeable geek suggested dumping Iinternet Explorer (IE) once I got Firefox installed but then backed off that suggestion because of some kind of symbiotic relationship between it and Windows XP. My question is: Does this relationship also exist between IE and Windows 98?
Lastly, not that I expect it would matter much to anybody else but me, I've given up any thought of reinstalling Windows 98. From what I read it can be a hassle and as you mentioned can lead to an unstable operating system under most circumstances.
Thanks one last time. Don't be surprised if you hear from me down the line.
Technology has always fascinated me. There are questions and problems I'm sure that will come up. The world of computers and associated science has provided me with an interest and a challenge as I travel the last few miles on the road to dust.

If you do a reinstall by backing up all of your important data and then wiping the disk clean and then do the reinstall, it will make your system MORE stable... I haven't used a Win98 system for a while, but when I did I would periodically do the wipe and reinstall just to restabilize the system... Usually it would be prompted by something that just didn't work well anymore, but it was never malware related... To reinstall over an existing install of Win98 tends to lead to instability....
I believe that IE is more separate in Win98 and that you can even remove it completely... One thing we haven't tried that you might want to try is to download a fresh copy of it, uninstall it while safely offline and then reinstall it... I would make sure you have FireFox lined up to go just in case it doesn't work, but it would probably not be a problem... There are some sites that won't work without IE, so it is a good idea to have it available even if you usually use FireFox... I have actually never used IE as a primary browser (except at work) and I have had an easier time of it because of that... I do keep it handy in case I have to use it for certain sites...
Feel free to come and ask questions about any PC stuff here... My range of knowledge is limited, but when you get the group together here there are few questions that can't be answered...

I hope you're interested enough to learn that after a 3 weeks wait I received, just yesterday, the installation CD of Firefox from Mozilla--- installed it and used it for the first time a few minutes ago. It seems to work fine. I'm able to access websites and links earlier unavailable to me. Don't know if I'll be able to download everything I want (you might remember that also was a problem). That remains to be seen.
Anyway thanks once again for your help.
Don't know if "Pop-Pop" will ever see this message. I think I'll send him a thank you as I believe he was the first to recommend trying Firefox.
Perhaps I'll have the privledge of communicating w/ you about something in the future.
Oh yes, now that you know that firefox works as an effective browser do you have any further thoughts why IE 6 doesn't.

I was unable to download Firefox so had to order an installation CD from Mozilla. It took 3 weeks to get here. But its installed and works fine. No problems, so far, browsing w/ it. Thanks for your suggestion.
Any thoughts as to why IE 6 doesn't perform all the time.

Have you tried the IE Repair function??
IE does tend to get targeted by a lot of malware that won't effect FireFox, so that is certainly a possibility as well...

Once again I have to display my stupidity when it comes to computers and terms associated therewith.
What's an IE repair function?

Maybe 'MicroSlop' should start handing out a service manual (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378/EN-US/) with any and all purchases of any of their product line... ;)

Thanks for your suggestion. The link you provided refers to repairs of IE6 w/
Windows XP. I use Windows 98 and intend to stick w/ it for a while yet. If you know a reference to repairing IE6 associated w/ Win98 let me know.

I forgot again that you have Win98... I think you may be able to uninstall and then reinstall IE for Win98, I don't think it has a repair option.... You might want to wait for someone who knows more about it to come by since I am not sure if it can be deleted or not... You could just reinstall it and see if that does it too...

The repair of Win98 is to go from Start to Run, type in "misnfo32"(without the quotes), click OK, select the Tools option at the top, then select the "Internet Explorer Repair Tool."
There's also a program called IEradicator that does a VERY thorough removal of IE and in some circles considered too radical a removal.

Thanx. I'll give it option 1 a try. Option 2 is too scary for me.

If you know a reference to repairing IE6 associated w/ Win98 let me know.
If you look at Add/Remove Programs in Win98, there should be an entry for IE6. Highlight it and click Remove Program, and a Repair/Install/Remove choice screen should come up. Choose Repair.
Note you will have to go back to Windows Update and load all the Critical Updates again (at least the ones that work).

There was a "typo" in your suggestion for when I typed in misnfo32 into Run I got a message indicating file couldn't be found.
I have little computer savvy but it occured to me that the file code name probably has something to do w/ Microsoft. So I typed in msinfo32 clicked on OK and followed instructions for using the repair function. Ultimately I received a message that Internet Explorer couldn't be fixed as it was missing 2 files. MSHTML.TLB and SCRRUN.DLL. I found vis Google a site from where I could download and install the needed DLL file but came up short w/ the TLB file.
Can you suggest a reliable, repeat reliable, online source from where I can download and install the missing files. Or some other solution for restoring same.
With my luck, however, I suspect that the problem may be more complicated then simple downloads will solve.
Looking forward to your reply.
Thanks in advance.
