I'm pretty much a newbie, but learning fast. Anyone know what tualatin is?
Intels new 1.2 Ghz Celeron is based on this. Is this the media....used to be silicon I assumed. But we all know what happens when you assume!!!!
Thanks all, glad to be here....I'm putting together a new AMD based sys.,
which means I'll be back soon. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Tualatin was the code name for the next generation Pentium 3. It was designed after the failed 1.13Ghz P3...I believe it is based on .13 micron technology...any Celeron 1.1Ghz or faster has a tualatin core...
However, Intel has traditionally only had one Pentium line of chips out at once...so when the P4 came out, the P3 wasn't going to be around for long, except in Laptops...
So right now, you get P4 desktops, P3 laptops and budget Celeron desktops and laptops...the tualatin core is very good. When run at a 133mhz fsb it is very competitive. This is why Intel has crippled it by running it at 100mhz fsb, so it won't compete with the P4...
If the performance was on par with a P4, it would be harder to justify the price increase...
It seems like Intel may keep the Celeron around a while. Now, what they call a Celeron is actually a P3 core...before, what they called a Celeron was a P2 core (a Pentium Pro really)
When the P5 comes out, I wouldn't be surprised if the P4 core is renamed Celeron and turns into a budget solution...

Thanks much for the reply...I was way off! I'm running a 1gig celeron in my present sys. (old Dell V400c), and even at 100 FSB, its not bad. I know there are alot of slot1 440BX MOBO owners that hope it stays at 100, or thier upgrade days are over. Thanks again!!!

I own a PIII Tualatin 1.26GHz, and it runs on a 133MHz FSB. It is the PIII core on a .13 micron die making it smaller, and using less power than the 'Coppermine' PIII. Since it is smaller, they have added to the L2 cache, on 2 of the new models. The 1.13GHz, and the 1.26GHz models are marked with an 'S'. There has always been 133MHz PIII's, and 100MHz PIII's. If you remember when the PIII came out Intel said it was a PII with some added instructions (the PII was a P Pro),so they called it PIII.

I thought the tulatin was the 64bit processer. Or is that titanium. I dont know i forgot

Yes, there are P3s based on tualatin as well as Celerons...and the P3s run at 133mhz fsb...I think having a P3 run faster than 1Ghz may have been a matter of pride for Intel after the huge embarassment of having to recall the 1.13Ghz P3 http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
But they aren't going to be around for long...once the P4 came out the P3 was living on borrowed time...
Intel isn't going to offer P3 and P4 desktops at the same time for any length of time...they only need/want 2 desktop cpus: high-performance and budget...

Diurnal Itanium is the 64-bit core. Titanium is NVidias new and improved Geforce chip.

Information on theCeleron (http://www.intel.com/home/celeron/index.htm) and you can get info on the PIII as well. Intel indicates that only the 1.2GHz, and 1.3GHz Celeron's are 0.13 micron process, and have 256K L2 cache. Celeron's have always been PII/PIII core processors with less L2 cache.

I agree with this...when I bought my 1G Celly & slocket, I checked out the then new 1.2G, Dell site guru's said because of the new architecture, it won't work on all slockets on the market..except 1 new one. Made by powerleap, contacted them, they won't sell just the slocket...gotta buy it with the 1.2G, ready to go for $160.00. Not me..can buy the 1.2 now for $110.00, slocket isn't worth 50. Paid $90.00 total for 1G & slocket.
1.1G is as far as u go, without thier new slocket...people on the Dell site with Slot1's are standing in line for the thing. I'm going AMD. When was the last time U saw bunch of blue guys doing AMD ads, or any ads at all? They spend $ instead on kicking Intels butt.

My mistake on the 1.1Ghz Celeron...it is the Coppermine core...
