I turn on pc, W95 begins to load, icons begin to appear on screen and then system just shuts down. It never fully loads. Similiar to other posts but the system is not on long enough to overheat. Any suggestions? Outside of heat/powersupply or RAM, what else could it be? One day it worked the next day it didn't.

Are there any unnecessary beeps at bootup? Are you sure it's not heat related? Have you taken the cover off and checked the fan on the processor? And all connections? Also, if we could have some system specs. it would be helpful.

No, there are no unnecessary beeps at bootup and I didn't think it would be heat related because the computer is only on for ~30 sec to 1 min before it shuts down and it will load in safe mode w/out shutting down. As far as system specs it's a Dell PII 333Mhz w/ 64mb RAM (not sure about motherboard and other components)and its never opened and inspected.

hai,
see to that ur processor fan is running properly....aand ur power connections or good.....if all are good ..try reinstalling ur OS(windows)
dont be afraid...ur program files remain restored on reinstalling and
reinstalling isnt a big thing....
if u cannot remain in ur windows for long and cannot reinstall from windows
try to boot ur system from bootup floppy and try reinstalling ur windows..
if it still gives u problem iam sure its a hardware related and try swapping ur powersupply with ur friend..

That machine is several years old, and if it never has been open, it needs to be...you will probably find semi-sentient dust bunnies in there! They must be evicted (let take up residence beneath the bed or something....), also the fans need to be inspected for proper funtioning...like do they spin up when power is applied?

Without a properly funtioning fan on the CPU it could heat up to the point of not functioning in about 10 seconds (and on more modern/faster cpus damage/death in about that time)...never rule ouit heat until you have inspected and eliminated it by testing.

I had a similar problem once... Bought a new UPS that was not amped enough for my system. Puter would power up and shut down. After about 3 times in a row (slow learner here), I finally realized the problem and switched to a bigger UPS. Problem solved. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Edit: (Forgot to make my point!) Could be a power supply problem... i.e. THE Power Supply. (Or anything else on the circuit providing power... including someone adding a power-sapping appliance between the 'puter and the home's main panel)
