Trying to share an internet connection.

Internet: Cable Modem
Share 1: XPHome PC With PCI NIC
Share 2: iMac G3 with Ethernet Port
Gateway: Linksys Wireless-B 2.4Ghz Broadband Router.

I'm trying to HARDWIRE the clients to the network, NOT USE THE WIRELESS
(The wireless connects to a printer I have in another room)

Anyway,

My Internet connection works fine when my Cable modem connects straight to the PC, but when I connect the router to the Cable modem, then the PC into the router, I get no connection!

I tried these steps:
Ethernet cable from modem to INTERNET port on router
Disconnected the cable modem from power for several minutes.
Connect power to modem.
Power cycle router.
Connect ethernet cable from PC into port on router.
Internet light is ON on the router, PORT1 light is ON too

Try power-cycling the PC, still nothing
Cannot ping router, not sure 192.168.1.1 is the right IP

Any ideas?
I haven't even TRIED to connect the MAC yet.

Thanks.

First of all are you sure you have the correct cable?
Patch cable is recommended ( Not cross over cables )

Second did you set the router up using the internal administrator ?
Check your doc’s for the default address . ( 192.168.1.1 is the default for most)
Open your browser and enter that address to reach the router setup.

As for the power up order.
Turn EVERYTHING off
Then power up in order. Modem, and wait for the lights to show on line and ready
Then power up the router
Then power up the system

If it still fails and
If you can not access the router setup or if you have forgotten the password you setup in the Router.
Disconnect the power from the router.
Then find the small hole in the front of the router and use a paper clip to press the internal reset button in that hole.
Press it in and Hold it for at least 5 second.
This will reset the router to the factory defaults.

After resetting the router you need to follow the power up order again.

I just set up a D-Link B wireless last night. The correct address is 192.168.0.1 not the ...1.1 one you mention.

See if that gets you into the setup menu.

Make Sure there are no problems with the NIC in device manager
Make Sure the NIC is set to obtain IP address automatically
Make sure the connection is listed in my network places.
Turn off PC
Turn off router
Turn off cable modem
Run a Cat-5 patch cable from the cable modem to the WAN/Internet port on the router.
Run a Cat-5 patch cable from the PC's ethernet card to one of the ports labled 1-4 on the back of the router.
Turn on the cable modem and wait until all lights are lit except for ethernet or PC.
Turn on the router. You should have a green light under WAN or Internet.
Turn on the PC and wait until it gets to the desktop. You should have a solid light on the port that matches the port you plugged the PC into.
Click on Start then run then type CMD in the box.
At the Command prompt type IPCONFIG and press enter. Please note what the IP address is for the NIC it should be 192.168.1.100. Please note what the gateway IP address is. It should be 192.168.1.1
Assuming everything has worked out for you so far. Click on IE and as soon as the program loads hit the stop button.
At the address bar type in http://192.168.1.1 and press enter. Do NOT include the www prefix.
You should be brought to a login screen. Leave the user name blank and the password will be admin, all lower case. We will change it later.

Once you have done this. click on the home page button and you should be on line. Any questions or if anything did not go as I have described, please post back. I can set up a linksys router in 10 minutes. If you are not on right away we have to narrow down the problem:

NIC
Cable Modem
Cables
Router
Browser
ISP

It's a shame you didn't post sooner. I'm in Denver visiting a friend but I have to catch a flight this afternoon, otherwise I would stop by and set it up for you. If you still can't get it running, send me a PM and I can talk you through it on the phone.

I just did this LAST NIGHT! The address is the one I posted. I just tried what was posted above and it does not work!

Also you must put admin in the user line and leave the password blank, not vice-versa.

Must I scan, upload and post the quick install manual for you guys?

Better idea! brb. Ok, see step 3 in this link (http://support.dlink.com/faq/view.asp?prod_id=997&question=DI-604%20/%20DI-614+%20/%20DI-624%20/%20DI-754%20/%20DI-764%20/%20DI-774%20/%20DI-604_revE%20/%20%20DI-614+_revB%20/%20DI-624_revC%20/%20DI-774_revB%20/%20DI-514%20/%20DI-514_revC) on the address required by D-Link routers.

Thanks for offering Ben!

I might take you up on the PM. I'm at work all day today, but I'll try this again when I get home.

By the way,

This is the exact cable I'm using from PC to Router
http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=173347&pfp=BROWSE

The cable I'm using from Cable Modem to Router is the same cable that Comcast used to connect the modem to my PC NIC

FTT, you were setting up a D-Link router. I think macellarius is setting up a Linksys Wireless-B 2.4Ghz Broadband Router as pointed out in his first post. The defaults could be different... ;)

Edit: looks like you got in there right before me... :)
