I have a wired network in my home with 3 computers successfully sharing internet access, files and printer. All gain access through a hub. I have now added an access point for wireless access to my laptop. The laptop accesses the internet without problem. However, I am unable to access the other computers and printer from the laptop.
Could someone please help this green horn figure this out?
Thank you.
Jim

You need to figure out the workgroup name.
You need to have a unique name for the lap-top
What is the OS of the lap-top & other pc's

All computers are XP Home edition. All have the same workgroup and have unique names. This includes the laptop.
Thanks for the response.

You need to run the wireless network wizzard in the control panel.

I have done that without success...

What do you mean without success?
Which PC did you run it on?
Did you make a disk?
Did you enable security?
Did you write down the code?

I ran the wireless wizard on the wireless laptop. It still does not find the other network computers, but does access the internet.
I did not 'make a disk'.
I did not enable security.
I'm not sure I know what 'code' you're referring to.
thanks...

You only get a code if you do enable security.
Toy need to run the wireless wizzard on the desktop PC you want to share files from. Then using the disk created on the desktop pc, run it on the lap-top.

From your last post I assume you mean to run the 'network setup wizard'. That is the only one that allows to create a disk. I did that and have now run that disk on my laptop, but still nothing.
I feel like I'm missing a link whereby the AP would identify the wired network somehow. Do I need to be concerned about IPs or anything like that?

There should be a wireless networking icon in the control panel. You must run that. I have not done it for months, but I recall the option to create a disk.
You will need to activate on the desktop so the lap-top can connect to it.

I have run the wireless wizard several times, and ways. Still can't find the wired network on my wireless lap top. Do you have a suggestion for a graphic enhanced document source for such instructions?

Did you run the wizzard on the desktop PC?

It's been a while since I have done this and I dont have a wireless setup at home. So humor me.
Run the setup on the desktop and tell me what each screen says and what response you gave.

I appreciate your efforts...let me explain how my network is set up so nothing is left out. I may have a twist or two that are getting in the way.
My internet connection comes into a router. From there I run it to my main desktop and a second peripheral desktop, both in my office.
I then run a cable from the router to another router in another part of the house from which a third desktop runs. All three of these computers run flawlessly, with internet access, file sharing and printer sharing all working just fine.
Now I've added an Access Point from the second router for wireless to my desktop. The internet access to the desktop has been working fine since first installed. It's there that I run into problems. As I've said earlier...my laptop does not show up on the desktops 'network places' and the desktops don't show on the laptop.
When I run the wireless wizard on the desktop the first screen after the welcome screen asks whether I want to set up a wireless network or add computer to a network. I've tried both.
The next screen asks whether I want to set up using flash drive or manually (I've tried both).
When I use the flash drive option the next screen tells me to save setting to flash drive by clicking next. Then directs me to run this on the other computers.
I've followed this without success.
I hope this helps.

Ok Jim:
We are getting warmer.
Run the wizzard without the flash drive and let me know what each screen asks and how you respond. I also need to know the IP address of each PC and device on the network.
Since you can get on-line, it's the wireless part that is the problem. and it's in the wizzard we need to concentrate our efforts.....

IPs:
desktop 192.168.0.103
lap top 192.168.0.111
AP 192.168.0.2
Running the wizard from the desktop or lap top give the same result...

usb or manual

auto or manual key selection
This is where we get into trouble.
We need to get the key written down when doring the desktop PC. Then manually enter the key when running the wizzard on the lap-top.
I also asked for your response to each prompt.
What did you choose, auto or manual? If you chose auto for both, they will have different keys and will NEVER be able to communicate :(

I chose manual and entered the key that I got from the desktop wizard. Still no luck.

you know, there maybe something up with the ap itself. if the connection is purely for internet sharing and doesnt have file sharing enabled... problems may occur. how does the AP connect to the network? i'm sorry if i'm repeating some old info

Jimpro,
Do you own a copy of PC-anywhere?

No I don't.
Are you acquainted with the guides at www.pcguidebook.com?

No. You have a really unusual setup,
Most people just have a wireless/wired router.
At this point, without having physical or virtual access to you pc, I cannot offer any more help. I'm sure we are missing something simple.
If you want to discuss this on the phone, you can send me a PM. But from this distance, there is nothing more that I can think off.
You could try attaching the notebook to the PC bia an ethernet cable to see of there is some software problem preventing the laptop from seing the other PC's on the network. If you can, then it owul strictly be a wireless problem as opposed to a PC problem.
