View Full Version : ICS - how to I restrict specific LAN PCs from using it?

There might be an obvious solution for this, but I wasn't able to find anything yet.

Here's the deal:

I have a PC with two network cards installed: one connects to the internet, the other one connects to a LAN hub. The internet connection has ICS enabled and working.
The Server PC is running WinXP Pro with SP2 installed, as well as Norton Internet Security.

What I am looking for is a way to tell the ICS serving machine to only allow specific machines on the LAN to access the internet, and to exclude all other machines that aren't specified. So far ICS lets any machine that's connected to the LAN connect to the internet, and that's not what I want.

Any ideas?

Welcome to the Forum.

Not possible. ICS assumes all LAN PC's are trusted, and cannot be configured.

If you have a firewall on that machine you could set that to block certain LAN machines but they would then also be restricted from accessing shares on the ICS machine if any. However it is not recommended having the ICS machine as a file/printer anyway as it opens up the risk of anyone being able to access those shares.

Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif forums.

As PS pointed out. You are SOL with ICS. You will need a router or a proxy server which will act like a router. As they say, the choice is yours.

Ah, alright. Thank you for the quick replies - now I know that it can't be done, so I can start looking into other solutions.

pave_spectre: I have the firewall on the server configured to restrict a number of LAN PCs, but unfortunately it doesn't block them from using the server's ICS.

Either way, thanks a bunch!
