I am a Mac user [so I get to ask stupid questions] . My neighbor has enlisted my help to troubleshoot his wireless setup.

He has Bellsouth DSL and AOL, which in itself doesn't make sense to me. His XP box can ping the Linksys router but AOL won't connect. Duhhhhhhhh. Now what?

Thanks for helping, speak slowly and I might be able to understand.

Have you tried AOL tecnichal support...now I realize that might be viewed as an oxymoron, if you are persistent you might be connected to the dude/dudette who has the answers...

Also, as far as speaking slowly, I suspect that you simply need to redo some neural connections. I've noticed that it's actually a form of what my wife refers to as "selective hearing!" When Michael Jordan was yet playing basketball, I used it extensively, especially when my wife had an extensive "honey-do-list!" Many Mac users have also employed it to shield themselves from the loud screaming noises of Windoze users whose machines constantly BSOD on them. ;)

Oh, and welcome tohttp://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif Forums!

Thanks for the quick response. Yeah, I was hoping it was a matter of clicking a button [crazy Mac person, of course it ain't that easy in Windoze].

AOL tech support it is then. WAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

You need to go into AOL. When you get to the login screen, you need to click on setup. Choose setup a new location. If you have newest version, it will find the broadband connection, if you have an older version, just choose TCP/IP as the connection instead of a dial-up modem.

The question becomes, if you have DSL, why are you willing to pay AOL $24.00 per month.

The question becomes, if you have DSL, why are you willing to pay AOL $24.00 per month. It's painless. It gets extracted from your credit card or bank account automatically each month!

Yes, but if you can also reduce it to $14.50/month allowing 5 hours dialup, and several names can be online simultaneously, or $9.95/month if you forgo dial-up.
Or save the whole thing and use the DSL ISP and pocket the money, more painless.

So if these crazy neighbors of mine have Bellsouth DSL AND AOL, they got some redundancy goin on? Right? [I myself have a cable modem being broadcast throughout my house via Airport Express and just had to plug it in and voila--wireless.]

I am not familiar with how to connect via DSL, is there some dialing goin on there? or is it connected all the time?

It depends, some use dynamic addressing, which is similar to dialup and gives users a different IP address each time from pool of addresses. This saves money for the DSL provider as less addresses are needed, you share from that pool.
I personally have static ADSL which has a permanent IP address to my router WAN port. It is always on, and I don't have to share an address with anyone.
