Hello,
Here is the 411, Office full of computers. Al networked together, all running win XP. All is perfect, but we purchased 3 new Dell's and they have been assinged 3 unique names. All are connected to a Linksys router. Each has it's own individual IP. After running Network Wizard all PC's are visible under MSHOME. All but ONE PC is accesible, I get the classic //GMTg61 is not accesible. Contact Network Admin for support. Now, I have tested PC in other locations in the office and with different NIC cables. 99% positive it is not an issue with cables or router or hub. When I access my router I can see this PC on the DHCP Client Table, it has the IP 192.168.1.102. But I get no response from ping. The culprit PC has full internet access and can access all other network resources, but it refuses to grant access to itself. I have turned Windows Firewall off, to no avail. I have run Net Setup Wiz a million times. Restored the PC back to original factory settings, still same issue. All Network Protocals are present. Intel Pro 100 network card has a diagnostic tool in Control Panel and that checks out says NIC card is 100%. What can I possibly be missing? :(

Not quite sure how far in you want to go on this - are you talking about sharing resources on the PC, or just being able to see it from other pcs?
You mention that each PC has an individual IP address, but this PC is in the DHCP pool in the router.
My first port of would be to verify whether the PC is using DHCP or static addressing.
Do an ipconfig /all on the PC and it will tell you what's what.
Another thing is to check that it has WINS enabled (workgroups use WINS to resolve MS network names)
Try the usual ping 127.0.0.1, IP address of the PC (make sure you are configuring the right card - some have more than 1!) and the default gateway (usually the Router) on the troublesome PC, and post back with the results.

Ok, you've lost me a little on the WINS thing. All PC's in the network appear on the DHCP Table that the router displays. This Dell Dimensions 3000 has only one NIC card. And when I ping the troublesome PC with the loopback I get no loss. All packets recieved. I just got done trying what it says here- http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/129056.html
And again setting the user access didn't make a difference. What I need is to be able to open MSHOME, and open the specified computer to access files in the shared docs folder and perhaps use that computers printer. Like I said I can see the troublesome PC from the network. It's there, the router sees it. Windows sees it in MSHOME. But access is always denied. I've set folders to share, set them to unshare. And nothing is aloowing me to open this computers shared Docs folder from the network. I hope that was a better explanation. Thanks again for your help in advance.

On the PC that denies access, go to control panel, administrative tools, computer management and then expand Local Users and Groups, and then go to Users and see if guest account is disabled(a cross X mark), if its disabled, double click it and untick Account is disabled, click apply, click OK.
Next, again go to Control panel, go to administrative tools, Local Security Policy, expand Local Policies, expand User Rights Assignment and double click the first entry named "Access this computer from the network". Make sure Everyone and Guest are listed there. If not add them using the Add User Group button. You have to type it and then OK it. Apply and then OK. Now restart this PC just for the hell of it. And see if others can access it now.
Also make sure that the LAN connections properties in the PC in question has got Client for Microsoft Network and FIle and Printer sharing is enabled. I hope you've done this alredy.
Plzz post back.

Control panel, go to administrative tools, Local Security Policy, expand Local Policies, expand User Rights Assignment. I don't have this option on this PC nor do I have a Local Users and Groups under computer management. These PC's are running WIN XP home ed. So I don't know if that makes a difference. But I was unable to do anything you suggested Curator.

Ohh!
You're running Windows XP Home Edition, I never realized that, infact you never told so. That does make a difference. Its not possible to do what I suggested with Home Edition. You have to do it with the help of that ntrights.exe but I haven't used it myself, never had to.
Are you still unable to ping the machine that denies access?

Yes, I apologize it must be Home ed. But since the SP2 it no longer says so on start up. And that is correct, the loopbackworks fine. Everything checks out but I cannot ping that pesky PC from any other PC on the network. I used the NTRIGHTS.exe according to the other forum but to no avail. Thanks again for any assistance.

Thanks for all the assistance. Turns out I had overlooked McAffee. All our other PC's are only running McAfee Virus Scan. The three new PC's purchased from Dell are all running McAfee Personal Firewall Plus. And of course since I had yet to realize this the settings were preventing the network from accessing the that particular PC. Seems the other 2 PC's I must have set up before the Firewall came online. Either way I have discovered the solution, thanks again.
