View Full Version : MS WORD is p***ing me off....

Okay, I operate Win XP with Word 2002 SP2.

I find, being something other than a yank, that the correct spelling of many words is often flagged as being incorrect.

Questions:

1. Despite switching to English (Australian) in Tools, and despite the Spell-Checker being UN-ticked, I still get these incorrect spelling red lines. Even on words which are spelt correctly, ie not the US way. Why is this??? Is MS giving lip service to the other language abilities but secretly ensuring it constantly defaults back to US English?

2. When flagged, I select the word and "Add to Dictionary". Later, in another document, I will type the same word only for it to be flagged again.

Am I p!ssing in the wind here??? What's the point of the "Add to Dictionary" function????

3. I often type in Size 10.

After using a FONT option, such as Italics or Underline and then switching it back off again, I often find the font will then continue on in Size 12 (default)

Why is this???

4. Am I somehow warped because this all p!sses me off so very much?

Help appreciated.

Word will give you errors like that when you use a word out of context otr it is missing a co-word such as 'have + been'. It flags one of them if the other is missing as a mispelled word.

As for the size issue, you highlight a word, increase it's size then unhighlight it and when you go to type more, the space from the space bar is also sized and if you tag onto that it will continue to be the new size. You must make sure the space is the size you want or this will continue to happen. It mostly happens when you go back ot words already typed more than as you are typing them.

Try this:
Highlight what you need to change and change it. Unhighlight it and type one letter. If it is the wrong size, highlight and change that before continuing.

Maybe someone else knows of another way but this is how I've done it in the past.

Thanks but with the font all I was changing was from NORMAL to ITALICS, I wasn't changing the SIZE. The entire sentence was in "10" but after switching Italics on, then off, it would jump to Size 12.

As for the spelling, in some cases it's because I use words it doesn't recognise. I add it the technical term as a word to the dictionary, but then later on in another .doc, it has to be told again.

Also, it highlights, for example, "tyre" as spelt incorrectly because it isn't spelt as "tire". Or "Colour" instead of "color".

You know what I mean??

As I live in New Zealand, I have the exact same issues as you with Word.

It normally can be overcome, but making sure that:

1) Any words Word says it does not know, are added to the dictonary.
2) Ensure that CUSTOM.DIC is selected under TOOLS/OPTIONS/SPELLING & GRAMMER
3) Click the SETTINGS under the GRAMMER pane in the window, and here, you can be quite selective about what Word sees as grammer or spelling errors.

Also, back at step (2), you can also turn off the spell checking completely if this needs to be done.

I don't generally have any issues, once the new words are added to the dictonary - any future use of words such as "Colour" generally are remembered and/or ignored from this point.

Also, find the CUSTOM.DIC file(use the FIND option under file-manager), and check that the file is not write-protected, because if it is, no new words can be added to the file, and so, will cause the problems you are having.

Let us know how you get on!
